League green lights return of video noise messages
Posted by Mike Florio on March 29, 2010 10:28 PM ET
Once upon a time, NFL home teams could actually be penalized if the noise in the stadium was so loud that it legitimately disrupted the visitors' offense. Though that stupid rule has long since been abandoned, the league has maintained for 21 years a ban on using video messages to encourage fans to get loud.

Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reports that this rule was wiped off the books at last week's league meetings in Orlando. And so teams will now be permitted to display messages like "Noise" and "Raise the Roof" and "Pump It Up" (but hopefully not "Simultaneous Fart in 3 . . . 2 . . . and 1 . . . !").

The goal? To make the experience more enjoyable for fans who have increasingly improving home technology where they can watch multiple games with their friends (and kill any slow moments with a call for a simultaneous fart in 3 . . . 2 . . . and 1 . . . .) "We want to make it a fun place for the fans to be, and [Commissioner] Roger [Goodell] pushed for this, and we will see how it works," Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said.

The only catch is that the messages must end "15 seconds before the ball is snapped," which we assume actually means 15 seconds before the play clock expires, since there's no way to know when the ball will be snapped, and thus no way of counting 15 seconds back from an unknown point.

Kaplan points out that no vote of the owners was required for the measure because it does not alter the rules of the game.

That said, it definitely will impact the experience for the road teams, especially in venues with lids.

I'm afraid fans at our stadium need some direction. The few games i've been to and what i watch on tv, most of the crowd doesn't seem to know when to get loud and when to get quite depending on who has the ball.

:laugh2: I was trying to be nice about it. Comments like that seem to rile a few of our fans up. I agree by the way.

Our fans just don't bring the noise on a consistent basis.

at texas stadium this wasnt true. At the new stadium it is true.

the giants and eagles games had good crowds. the rest of the season the crowds were lousy for those types of attendance figures.

The panthers and seahawks games were a disgrace imo with as many people as were in the building.

I imagine this is true of all cities with new stadiums, new stadiums bring higher prices on tickets, food, parking and merchandise. That brings the corporate yuppie type into the stadiums and thus you have people who just are not there for football.

Can they also tell them when to be quiet because our home fans are pretty bad at that too

Fun for the fans?

How about easing up on the TD celebrations? I don't even like most of them, but it's fun for the fans.

You mean ease up on the penalties/fines right?

I agree. I dont want props or anything but other than that who cares. The only people who dont like it are 60 year old white guys sitting on the couch. Even defenders rarely seem to mind

that is never going to change. That noise comes from the fans who attend 1 game a year and are there to see the players they know...which all happen to be on offense.

This is a front runners town, front runners show up when teams are winning and they root for the players they know, again, like romo, barber etc...

that is also the same reason romo gets so much grief around here and now barber this year. Front runners are loud and obnoxious, not just in the stadium but in calling radio stations, asking questions online and posting on message boards.

so when you are in the stadium and the team is driving and about to score and it gets really loud, you can basically just look at the idiots that stand up and scream and yell and realized who and what they are...

its a huge problem here and In many other cities.

The experience must vary greatly depending on where you are. Because the new stadium is way louder than Texas Stadium in my opinion.

for the giants and eagles games, yeah it was.

The rest of the season it wasnt.

throw in the fact that even games like seattle and carolina had 20 to 30k more people that is pretty bad.

I have always defended the crowds at texas stadium that place got a bad rap. People were reall into it there.

The new building was pretty poor for the crowd size. that panthers game was ridiculous as were the seattle and san diego games.

I hope it improves next year, but with jax, det, chicago rolling in, those have the potential to be terrible crowds.

The Atlanta game was pretty raucous until it got out of hand. There were several lopsided games in the stadium this year.
