LEFTWICH, CULPEPPER IN LATROBE

Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2008, 5:29 p.m.
We reported on Saturday night that the Steelers would be adding both Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper to the roster in the wake of the broken collarbone suffered by quarterback Charlie Batch.
Both veteran (and unemployed) quarterbacks are at the team’s training camp in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, undergoing physicals.
It’s presently unclear whether both men will be signed. Apparently, at least one will join the 80-man roster.
It could be that the Steelers are using Leftwich and Culpepper as leverage against each other, in order to sign one or both for the most favorable contract possible. The fact that Culpepper represents himself (and thus has a fool for a client) could make it easier for the Steelers to squeeze them both.
Because Batch has not been placed on injured reserve, two players would have to be removed from the roster if both Leftwich and Culpepper join the team.
Batch is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. It’s possible that he could be cut, if the Steelers are happy with Leftwich and/or Culpepper.
Leftwich was a first-round draft pick of the Jaguars in 2003. Culpepper was a first-round pick of the Vikings in 1999.

If he is cut I'd say we sign him. He has some good experience and some talent and would certainly be an upgrade to Brad Johnson. Even if we have to let him heal up for a few weeks he would make for some good insurance and would be better than any other option out there (including Culpepper and certainly Leftwich) IMO. However, I don't see him getting cut.

If I had to choose between Simms, Culpepper & Leftwich, I would choose Culpepper.

At least Culpepper has more ability to run around and escape pressure more than Simms and OBVIOUSLY Leftwich. Plus IDK if it makes that much of a difference to our WRs but for me the transition between a Lefty QB and a Righty QB would be weird.

I wouldnt want Culpepper or Leftwich, and only want Simms if he is cut or costs no more than a late pick to acquire

Culpepper and Leftwich are both lard arses, and Culpepper is a turnover machine...the other guy has one of the slowest releases ever

Well it looks like Leftwich signed with the Steelers now.

They are both lard arses but if we are forced to find a backup, Culpepper is probably the best FA QB out there, unfortunately.

he's a name player, but he isnt any good anymore and he is nowhere near 100% anyway

I'd rather stick with Johnson...at least he isnt going to lose a game all by himself like Culpepper can, and he works hard and knows the offense too

Not to hijack this thread, but I remember when some wanted us to draft Leftwich instead of TNew.

Camp will be over and the regular season started for the Steelers by the time Leftwich unwinds from his first practice throw. :D

We had three factions if you recall.

Tnew
Lefty
And some DE/OLB that went to the ravens.:D

I would, at the time, have been happy if we got any of the three, although the homer in me wanted Lefty.

Either way, we seem to have gotten the best of the three so I am happy.

Any person that watched that kid play at Marshall would have thought he was a good pick, although I was more interested in T-New because I just knew that Quincy was going to be our QB for the next decade! ;)
