LIONS COMMENCE NEGOTIATIONS FOR NO. 1 PICK

Posted by Mike Florio on March 22, 2009, 7:30 p.m.

The Detroit Lions hold the first overall pick in the draft. And they have the ability, if they so choose, to sign the player to a contract in advance of the draft.

According to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com, the Lions have commenced the process of negotiating a contract with “their first-round draft pick.”

The player has yet to be identified.

Though the early portions of the report from Kowalski imply that the Lions are talking to only one player, quotes in the story suggest that the Lions plan to expand the process.

“We have to have robust dialogue with the agents of the players we’re interested in,” Lions president Tom Lewand said. “We’ve started that process and we’ve made it very clear to all of them that we have to have that as this month draws to a close.”

Consequently, we must break from our recent habit of bashing the Lions and applaud them.

The Lions should be talking to multiple players, if for no reason other than to leverage their actual favorite into taking a lower deal. If, along the way, their second choice is willing to take a much lower contract, then the Lions might decide to take that guy, instead.

“We won’t put a timetable on it,” Lewand said. “From our standpoint, it’s whenever everything that needs to come together, comes together. There’s no timetable one way or the other. If we make the decision and [G.M.] Martin [Mayhew] and [coach] Jim [Schwartz] and everybody else is comfortable with it and we can come to a contract with the guy, there’s no reason we can’t do that tomorrow. If we can’t — and any one of those pieces isn’t in place — and it doesn’t get done until the night before the draft, that’s fine, too.

“Whenever the muffin rises above the tin, it’s time to eat.”

OK, that last part was stupid. But we otherwise agree completely with everything Lewand is saying.

If it is anyone other than Stafford they are beyond stupid.

Not to step on your toes, but I've got to disagree. What good's a quaterback without a team?

Get the left tackle.

Until we can identify the player they are in talks with, I disagree.

Oh, I still think Detroit would be better served making a deal and moving down at least a couple spots.

I disagree. A football team is only as good as their QB. You have to start with a QB and build a team around him. If I was granted an expansion team, my priorities would go: 1-Hire a true football man as the GM, 2-Hire the Head Coach, 3-Find a franchise QB. Left tackle may be close behind but I definately would look to get the QB first.

Unless a QB is a supreme talent he will sink without a team around him. No doubt about it, Detroit is as bad a team as there's ever been right now. Picking Stafford is saying you believe he's a generational QB talent.

That's nice.

Maybe they tried to move down and couldn't find a partner.

I'd like to see your left tackle block for a Brad Johnson type and make it to the SB. Good luck.

The only way this would benefit them is if they signed Stafford. Cause otherwise there is not many things they can do with someone early. If they sign Stafford he can get in good solid offseason workouts with his WRs and TEs. That way he would be more than ready for the NFL.

The draft is over a month away. There is plenty of time.

I like Stafford and I'm a UGA guy, but I'd have reservations about taking him with the #1 overall pick.

I'd never take a QB #1 in this day and age unless he was an Elway or Aikman calibar prospect, and Stafford isnt remotely close to either.

I dont agree with alot of what Mel Kiper says, but I do agree with him a little in that Stafford is similar to Jeff George. Huge arm, but is lacking alot of other key attributes.

Judging by how he played at UGA, he isnt worth a top-10 pick IMO. Doesnt mean I think he'll be a massive bust, but if people are expecting another Aikman, Elway or Manning they are going to be sadly mistaken.

Brad Johnson won a super bowl. So did Mark Rypien, Trent Dilfer & Doug Williams.

Not if Stafford is not the top rated player on there draft board. I would be BEYOND scared of spending a first round DP on a QB, especially the #1 pick in the draft especially if he is an underclassman.

The past 10 years, the following QB's have been drafted in the TOP 10:
Matt Ryan
Jamarcus Russell
Vince Young
Matt Lienart
Alex Smith
Eli Manning
Phillip Rivers
Carson Palmer
Byron Leftwich
David Carr
Joey Harrington
Michael Vick
Tim Couch
Donovan McNabb
Akili Smith

That is 15 QB's. Of them 2 would qualify as no doubt franchise QB's (McNabb, and Palmer) with 3 more proving to be very good NFL QB's though not true franchise QB's (Rivers, Eli Manning, and Vick (when he was in the league)), and the jury still being out on two (Ryan and Russell), although all early indications are that Ryan is atworst a very good NFL QB, and looking bright that he can be a true franchise QB.

At best, that is 3 of 15 QB being franchise NFL QB's or 1 in 5 being a franchise NFL QB. Those are NOT very good odds with the #1 draft pick. And even lower odd, when you consider that Stafford is an underclassman. And when you look at the underclassman that have come out early and succeeded you are left with just Vick (if you want to consider him a success).

It isn't stepping on my toes. I will respond very simply.

Matt Ryan.
