Marvin Austin described as “excuse-making con artist”
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 14, 2011, 1:44 PM EDT

APIf you thought Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Fooball Weekly’s assessment of Cam Newton was overly harsh, you probably won’t like his take on UNC defensive tackle Marvin Austin.

In a piece this week on players with potential character concerns, Nawrocki said Austin interviewed very poorly at the Combine, throwing his school under the bus for his suspension last year without accepting any blame for wrongdoing.

I really don't like this Nawrocki guy. I've got a big problem with an old man putting 20-22 year-old kids on blast for immaturity.

It's really ironic.

I will say, it's amusing to read though! :laugh2:

It's not like he asked them if their moms were hookers...

Really though, character is hugely important, so why not put them on blast about their past? Not every bad character kid can be reformed... If Jerry had realized that, maybe he wouldn't have wasted picks on Quincy, Derek Ross, and Antonio Bryant.

I just don't like the tone and vigor in which he says them. I don't think he comes off objective at all. When you say things like "con-artist" or has a "fake smile" in the case of Cam Newton, you've taken it to a personal level which seems completely out of place.

It would be like a teacher discussing someone's daughter at a parent/teacher conference saying something like "Sally can't pay attention in clase because she's lusting after her male classmates and looking to ***** around," instead of saying "Sally has a hard time focusing."

I'm not running an apologetic for any of these kids, because like you said, "charachter counts." There is just something wrong with someone like Nawrocki and his approach.

These are grown men playing the most toughest, most big-boy game there is. Seems like a huge difference from a schoolgirl to me.

Now is he trying to sound a little too macho and "scout-like"? Probably, but so are tons of these internet draft gurus.

Lol, "grown men?" Mature physically perhaps, but not mentally. Go visit your local college campus with kids that age and tell me If you still think these guys are "grown men" in terms of maturity.

I got my bachelors a little later than most do and was surrounded by girls and boys the same age as Austin and I can tell you there is a huge difference.

Don't like schoolgirl analogy? Okay, try a college-aged girl interviewing to get into a school or a job.

There is a vast chasm of a difference between who you are at 21, than who you are at say, 28 or 30.

Who said this, the same guy who reported Marcus Cannon cancer. That being said Austin needs a team with a stronger locker room than Dallas has.

Here's Narwocki's take on Gabe Carimi's perceived negatives:

"....Has a white-collar mentality at a blue-collar position and carries an inflated opinion of himself. Thinks he’s better than he is and came off as arrogant and selfish in interviews at the Combine...."

Seriously, that's a straight junior high teenage girl line "thinks he's better than he is..."

I think in a sea of internet draft gurus, Nawrocki uses a little hyperbole and cattiness in an attempt to stand out from the pack. Not that that some of these kids don't have some legit concerns, but it feels like Nawrocki is so over the top and sensational about it he feels like he's more concerned about making a name for himself and attracting eyeballs than conveying useful information to his reader. Some of his stuff comes across as so catty that it feels like reading a celebrity tabloid like Perez Hilton talk about a teen pop star.

Back to Austin, considering he plays a need position, I'm curious at what pick does the reward become worth the risk. 71?

There's often a big difference between how you are at 28 and 40, too. You're definitely more mature. But that doesn't mean you aren't a grown man at age 28. Let's stop making excuses for the mean old internet draft gurus picking on these poor guys.

It's really ironic.

I know, what's next? Blasting 33-35 year old kids for being immature?

Where was the immaturity pass when I was 20 years old?

"Ah, don't worry about me being late for the last week.......I'm 20, which means you should expect that of me and offer absolutely no repercussions or admonishment".

Honestly, at what age is it okay to call someone on immaturity? If not 22, then when?

The judgments aren't meant to be a statement on what these guys are going to be like at 40, when they're married with four kids and a car dealership. They're meant to be a statement on what they're going to be like at 22, 23, 24 and 25.

Consider that the average career is 3 1/2 years. If we're looking at a 21 year old, you're looking at mostly getting their maturity at those very ages. I'm guessing that what most guys are like at 22 is not vastly different from what they were like at 21. Maturation isn't always a light-going-on kind of thing.

I don't have a problem with him savaging these guys. Sure, it's a bit of hyperbole in some cases and downright wrong in others, but it's a valid and huge part of the player evaluation process.

Love these concrete thinkers.

Nobody has excused any of these kids for immaturity or character issues.

I've only questioned Narwocki's approach in doing it.

His analysis doesn't read like legit scouting report, it sounds like a pseudo psychoanalysis report..."he has a fake smile...." "he's a con-artist..."

Gimmie a freakin' break.

You don't have to explicitly say that you excuse immaturity when you basically come out and say that it should be expected.

Whether or not his approach is reasonable or not has nothing to do with you having "a big problem with an old man putting 20-22 year-old kids on blast for immaturity."

Lol, so you quote me multiple times sans my posts that actually put everything in context: "I just don't like the tone and vigor in which he says them. I don't think he comes off objective at all. When you say things like "con-artist" or has a "fake smile" in the case of Cam Newton, you've taken it to a personal level which seems completely out of place.

Further, my responses regarding maturity is a response to ChocoLab glibbly saying "these guys are all grown men..."

They are no more grown men than any other 19-20 year old college kid.

At no point have I defended any of the mentioned players, I've only criticized Narwocki's specific style of articulating that criticism.

I know you thought you had a cute point to make, but it's completely off the mark.
