TUNA LEANING SPARANO?

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that Dolphins football poobah Bill Parcells has told owner Wayne Huizegna that Parcells wants to hire Cowboys offensive line coach Tony Sparano to be the next coach of the Fins.

Actually, the guy at the top of the Tuna's wish list is Browns coach Romeo Crennel, but there's a growing sense that there's no way that Parcells will be able to pull off the move, given that Crennel is under contract in Cleveland for two more years.

But reports of Parcells' desire to hire Sparano could create problems under the Rooney Rule, which requires at least one minority candidate to be interviewed for each head-coaching vacancy. If word gets out that Sparano is the guy, the Tuna might not be able to persuade any minority candidates to sit for the job.

Complicating matters is that Huizenga didn't follow the spirit of the Rooney Rule in hiring Parcells, and Parcells apparently won't be adhering to the spirit of the Rooney Rule in chasing down Jeff Ireland, his former right-hand man in Dallas, to be the G.M. in Miami.

As to the G.M. position, the current Herald report contains a factoid that supports the rumor (as we heard it on Sunday) that current G.M. Randy Mueller already has been fired. Per the Herald, Mueller was seen driving away from the stadium with two minutes left in the season-ending game -- and he was nowhere to be seen in the locker room after the game ended.

MUELLER IS OFFICIALLY DONE

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the termination of Dolphins G.M. Randy Mueller became effective at 9:00 a.m. EST on Monday.
Mueller never had any contact with new Fins football poobah Bill Parcells.
Before joining the Dolphins as G.M. under Nick Saban, Mueller was the General Manager of the Saints. He spent several years in the between the two gigs working for ESPN.

------------

I tend to think this means Ireland is out of the running. Jerry was very adamant about not letting any of the personnel guys go until after the draft. You'd think Parcells would like to fill his GM position before then.

let the offseason of discontent begin. : ) will be interesting to see how the relationships pan out. i'm not sure garrett will go but ireland likely. why would miami give permission for garrett to leave, only to come back a year later when the reason he left is he wanted to be here?

hopefully garrett will wait it out around here and not get caught up in the hype.

as for ireland, if it's a promo, it won't matter, will it? if his contract says he gets final say, that's what we go by not bills reputation. i'd like to see ireland stay long term, and through the draft at a minimum. but if he gets a promotion he's within his rights to pack up and go like we all could.

Not exactly a suprise. usually when a team stinks that bad the GM and the Coach both go- but since Cameron has only been there a year then he can get a pass. But Mueller walks the plank.

Cameron told the team yesterday that he was staying, but obviously that's not going to stop Florio from speculating. You'd think it would be announced that he was gone about the same time as the Mueller announcement.

I think there's a good chance we come out unraided.

Maybe some of that is so Cameron can make it public that he won't quit and needs to be fired. In that case, I'm sure he would be entitled to the remainder of his contract.

We'll be raided. Make no bones about it. Every successful team is going to lose some of it's staff. It's only a guess, but I'd be willing to bet that Garrett stays while Sporano goes. The guy's got to feel slighted after the JG hire and being stipped of his play calling duties. The only thing is that, as the assistant HC, would the only position he could leave for is a HC gig? If BP wanted him as an OC, would it be a demotion from the assistant HC title Sparano already holds in Dallas so Jerry could block the move?

It'll be interesting and depressing at the same time, that's for sure.

Cameron is as good as gone. He stinks as a coach and he's lost his veteran players. He had an incident with Keith traylor last week and his relationship with jason taylor is non - existent. Cameron will be gone by Wed.

Per NFL rules, a head-coaching candidate on a playoff team with a first-round bye must be interviewed before Jan. 6. A team can't prevent an assistant from leaving to become a head coach - if that's what the assistant wants.

"A lot of times what happens, and I've had it happen really within the last few years two or three times, is a club will request permission to talk and the coach right with me says 'I'm not interested'," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "That has happened."

Jones also has heard the speculation that former Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, the Miami Dolphins' new vice president of football operations, might be interested in hiring Cowboys scouting director Jeff Ireland as his general manager.

Jones, who also holds the GM title in Dallas, said the NFL rules are very specific about front-office hiring procedure if Ireland indeed becomes a candidate.

"If someone has a chance to advance to a real general manager's role - and it's underlined and highlighted - it means it just can't be a title," Jones said. "Ultimately his next job now has got to be making all the decisions about the players, the draft and everything else for an existing executive to get to be interviewed for a higher position."

Jones said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell must confirm whether a candidate would indeed assume total personnel authority. Jones also has pointed out any such moves in the personnel department can not take place until after the draft.

If that includes hiring the HC, then Parcells is SOL.

Everybody knows Parcells will be "buying the groceries" in Miami.

It will be interesting to see if Miami can pull this off and sell it that Ireland would really have a GM role.

Parcells will try to raid Dallas like he's done in previous stops...

He will look to add players he knows can improve his roster. Makes sense to me.

Ginn for Carpenter. Straight up. They need young LBs and we need a punt returner.

That whole Rooney rule thing is such a pile of hypocrisy. Most of those interviews are strictly for show- means nothing. And it is BS anyway= if a GM KNOWS excactly who he WANTS as a coach then that is that- there should be no bs about interviews. This could be done by the GM/Owner telling the league that I have this person in mind- if I do not get him then I will have an open process and due all sorts of interviews. BUT if the guy I want says yes then that is that - it ends there.
