PFT: NFC playoffs could see a 5-11 team in and a 12-4 team out

Goddell would intervene before that ever happened.

Even if a 5-11 team made it this year ahead of a 12-4 team I honestly don't think there is anything Goodell could do this year.

As unfair at that scenario is, those are the rules the league is currently playing under and at the end of the day it would be wrong to change them mid-stream. I suspect that change would happen in the offseason.

The only way to change the system is to do what the NBA or NHL does.

Essentially, that eliminates the purposes of having divisions, which I dont' think they will do.

It doesn't have to be that way. An adjustment as I described above could eliminate this situation while still keep the division titles relevant.

You'd still have the same problem of an 8-8 team getting in and and 11-5 team being left out. Same problem, though to a slightly lesser extent I guess. I just don't think you can put a qualifier before division winner.

If this were to happen, I think the league will seriously have to think about changing the system. Maybe if a division winner is at .500 or less, they miss the playoffs and would be replaced by a 3rd wild card team if their record is better.

They would have to, that scenario would just be embarrassing.

How do you handle the seeding ? Bump all 3 WC teams up? Couldn't there be a scenario where the best WC team also has a better record than the 3 seed?

How do I handle the seeding when?

To be clear, I think the system we have now is the best way to do it, considering how short the season is. Bad teams getting in over good ones is the downside, but it is what it is.

I did say that the division winner could get knocked out if their record was .500 or less. That would mean you need 9 wins to keep your spot.

And yes, it wouldn't eliminate the problem completely (a 9 win team in, and a 11 win team out), but the discrepancy would be much less egrecious than what may happen this year.

You know what's worse? If that 5-11 team is the Saints, they would get home field for the first game and would likely romp the wild card team considering how dominant they are in the superdome (minus the bengals loss last week).

This is roughly the idea I was thinking of as well. Having said that I'll give you all the credit RXP for posting it first. :)

If you have a winning record and you are a division winner, then your playoff spot is untouchable. If you are division winner and you don't have a winning record (or maybe if you have a losing record) then other teams in the division with winning records can bump you out of your spot.

The 3 division winners get the top 3 seeds and the WC teams are seeds 4, 5, and 6. The 6 seed goes to play the 3 seed, like today. The WC teams at 4 and 5 play with the 4 seed getting home field advantage. Not much different then what we have today.

Again, this would minimize the problem without eliminating it. The only way to eliminate the problem is to get rid of the divisions. And I would not support that.
