Cowher is like Schottenheimer; he will get you to the dance but not much farther. 2 SBs in 15 years, and he was dead lucky to win one.

Considering Schottenheimer has zero Super Bowls, I am very impressed with your comparison.

That is one thing this team does need again.

The Steelers have identity. And always have under Cowher.

You knew you got the Chin and Spittle, a strong running game and an attacking defense.
I totally agree. The true contending teams have an identity, due to stability at the head coaching level, and their players reflected that. NE is making a run, Belichek longstanding and counting at the HC spot. Baltimore is making a run with Billick. SD with Schotty, etc.

Chicago is a contender, but their identity has been defense the Jauron days. Lovie just took it to the next level. Seattle and Holmgren. Brees brings a contender's mentality to NO, but I'm still not sure about they're D.

But you get the point. The 'boys are still trying to figure themselves out. Part of that is Parcells and him trying to get the right people on his staff. I think the hodge podge collection of people on his staff is directly reflected in what's put on the field.

I think there is no chance in cowher ever coming here.

He has said many times, like marvin lewis has been preaching in cincy, that he doesnt like free agency and doesnt really want to use it. He likes to build his teams around the draft and mold it the way he wants it.

He has consistently brought in outstanding assistants. Much like jeff fisher in Tennessee cowher always surrounds himself with good young coaches, the league is always taking his assistants and he continues to win and bring in new coaches.

I think the philosophy he has would clash with jones and I dont think it would be a good fit. Plaxico burress has a lot of talent. He wasnt even that big of a problem, but they release him after a 15-1 season and then plug in spare parts the rest of the year and win the super bowl.

I think that flies in the face of what jerry jones does and likes to do. He is usually the guy on the other end of signing those players, not the one releasing them.

Again, Seeing that jones is stubborn and doesnt let the head coach here pick all his assistants and the way we sign free agents I dont think it would work. Think schottenheimer in washington. Snyder was too dumb to see the long term results around building on defense and running the football. He didnt have the foresight to understand. Now he is in the same spot signing all these free agents, and schottenheimer is winning where no one thought he could.

I think the same would happen here, if cowher didnt want high priced free agents and jerry brought them in it would be a clash and setup for a quick exit for cowher.

Just curious to those "No to Cowher" people, does anyone have a valid reason or just don't care for his bulging chin?

I doubt Cowher would ever consider coaching in Dallas or really, anywhere other then perhaps Carolina. Word from Pittsburgh is that this is not about money or even about being tired of Pittsburgh/coaching. It rummored that this is a personal issue between he and his wife. Cowher's wife has already moved to NC and taken the children. According to sources close to the situation, this is about Cowher's wife wanting him out of football and back in NC with her and the children. Essentially, if he elects to go else where or even stay in Pittsburgh, it's a choice of football over his family. Cowher just isn't that kind of guy. If the rumors are true, I don't see Cowher coaching anywhere for at least a season or two. Maybe more.

They have 1 child in the house and she is going to be a JR is HS. I'm sure with basketball and boys she thinks about dad nonstop.

OBTW, it's about the money. 4 million when the going rate for the best is 8???

From what i hear his family is behind him 100% in coaching.

His children are pretty much grown. If she was going to cause a problem, wouldn't it have been when they were younger? That's just internet rumour.

I wouldn't rule out him taking a year or so off. Most of the time, burnt out coaches do that to recharge. I don't think he would just leave Pittsburgh for another job immediately. He doesn't have any bitterness to the Rooneys or the franchise itself.

Not what I hear. According to reports as recent as this morning on M&M, it's not about money. According to those reports from a guy close to Cowher, she's already left without Cowher. It's up to him to follow or not. That's the story reported this morning.

Juicy stuff. And if Mike and Mike reported it, it's got to be true.

They work for ESPN, right?

If it were Greenburg or Golic reporting this, I might agree with you but as this was an interview live this AM with a guy who apparently covers the Steelers and is close to the situation (or so I understand it), I think it kinda puts a different spin on the whole thing. Guy was actually kind of abrasive about the whole thing IMO. Said he never figured Cowher to be the kind of guy who gets led around by the chin from a women (some such thing) but there it is. I'm sorry I don't have the word for word on it but I'm sure it's in todays broadcast. The interview I mean.

Take it for what it's worth but that is what was reported earlier today.

Actually the scenario you described as reported has been speculated quite a bit since it came out that Cowher may not return to Pitt. As soon as he and his wife built that huge house in NC, it was speculated that he may leave Pitt. And the speculation started right after the SB. It's really not anything new.

The luster off the SB hadn't even dimmed before they started speculating on Cowher's contract status, whether he would return, and the possible reasons why he would leave.

I agree with you WG. I know there was speculation about the NCSt. Job previously and I also know that Cowher is a big family guy. I mean, you can look at the situation and say that 4.5 a year is not much but I'm pretty sure that I could live on it OK. He's been a HC for 15 years, to say nothing of what it took to get to that point. Might just be as simple as his wife saying, "We have enough money. It's time now for us to take some time for ourselves." Who can blame her? Who can blame him if he decides she's right? You look at Parcells, Johnson, a lot of succesful coaches in the NFL and what kind of life do they have outside of football? I wouldn't blame him one bit if that was his reasoning. Not saying it is but simply that I could not find fault in a decision of family over whatever else. JMO of course.
