Just ten days after Eli Manning finally signed his contract extension, another quarterback from the class of 2004 just got a whole lot richer.

ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports that the Chargers and Philip Rivers have agreed to terms on a six-year, $92 million contract extension through 2015, with $38-39 million guaranteed.

"This is a great day for the Chargers and Chargers fans," said Chargers team President Dean Spanos said in a statement. "Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He's a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team."

The total value and guaranteed money are very similar to what Manning signed for, showing that general excellence, leadership, and good stats can be worth as much as a Super Bowl championship. (Only Manning family members and Giants fans would deny that Rivers could have won with the '07 Giants, too.)

The guaranteed money is actually higher than what Manning earned. (Although one could argue Eli will get $47 million "guaranteed" . . . unless he's cut after this year.)

As PFT's fearless leader Mike Florio points out, the key will be how much Rivers earns in the next couple of years.

If the structure of the contract is any indication, we suspect it will be similar to Manning's money, but perhaps a little less to adjust for New York inflation.

Either way, the Chargers locked up one of the best young quarterbacks in the league after quiet negotiations that Pasquarelli described as "sparse" only a few days ago.

Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith is a happy man to have "his guy" locked up long-term.

"We feel Philip is an outstanding player with a very bright future. It's a great feeling knowing he will be with us for many years to come," Smith said in a statement.

Smith essentially choose Rivers over Manning first, then Drew Brees. Perhaps Brees has been a little better over the last three years, but the decision will pay off big dividends by the time Rivers nears the end of this contract.

UPDATE: Scout's Adam Caplan reports Rivers will get $38.5 million guaranteed.

I can't believe how some folks don't think Rivers is all that but I rank him 3rd right now behind Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and just ahead of Romo. The guy is an outstanding QB and gets better every year.

Hmm... I agree Phillip is good, but I don't agree he is better than Romo. I have problem with Romo i.e. with his turnovers so far in regular season, but Phillip is not playmaker that Romo is.

I wasn't much a believer of Phillip either, since I thought personally, Ben would turn out to be the best and then Eli and then Phillip when they were drafted. At this point, Eli is the third as far as QBing is concerned, but he does have a Ring, one more than Phillip.

Phillip is definite Top 10 QB, but I will take Drew Brees right after Tom and Peyton. If Drew had a better D, I think he could win a SB.

Eli Manning's contract was the funniest offseason story this year. Ridiculously undeserved, despite his defense and run game leading him to a Super Bowl ring.

Rivers deserves this. He's a player who makes his team better, instead of the other way around.

Brees is #3, Rivers 4, Romo 5.

I guess I just don't get the love for Drew Brees. He really hasn't done anything in the NFL except throw a million passes. He puts up big numbers but he hasn't produced much success in the playoffs and isn't the playmaker that Romo is.

Not saying he isn't a very good QB but I don't think he is as good as Rivers or Romo.

Good for him, he's quickly becoming one of the league's elite QB's.

What really bothers me is all the fools at ESPN who think Roethlisberger is now in the top 3 if not the best QB in the league. Talk about a QB winding up in a lucky situation to succeed. BTW in case you cant all tell, I hate the steelers :banghead:

:laugh2: he was worse than that in his first SB. He had like a 39 QB rating. And he was very fortunate that he wasn't the goat of that game. I believe Karlos Dansby had the ball thrown right to him on that final drive and he just couldn't hang on to it. I would've loved to see that be the end of the SB.

Don't even get me started on that fat overrated piece of trash Big Ben. Dude is the luckiest QB in the world.

He has to throw a million passes. He has no defense and is constantly having to put points on the board.

I agree completely. Rivers is my favorite QB out there, all around, and the one guy I'd trade right now for Tony Romo and never think twice.

Of course on a more short term basis I'd take Brady or Peyton as well but since they're older, and thinking long term, then Rivers is the only guy I'd trade for Tony right now.

I love watching the guy play and his attitude and everything. Good to see him get paid.
