Well, ESPN has now hired two new broadcasters who reneged on verbal deals with other networks.

Last month, we reported that Matt Millen had a verbal deal with NBC before jumping to ESPN. (ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer later denied that ESPN had knowledge of any deal between Millen and NBC, and we didn’t get around to posting on that before the shelf life on the story had expired.)

Now, Peter King of SI.com reports that Jon Gruden had verbally agreed to work for NFLN, as the color commentator for the league-owned network’s in-house slate of games.

Per King, the two sides had finalized “everything but the signature on the paper.”

Then Gruden took a job with ESPN.

And so NFLN chief Steve Bornstein reportedly is furious with Gruden, and presumably with ESPN, which stealthily swooped in to nab Gruden once ESPN realized that the guy who looked like Beavis with the “bighead” camera feature could be swapped for Beavis’ alter ego, Kornholio.

Our guess? Agent Bob LaMonte intentionally and deliberately (and discreetly) shopped the NFLN offer to ESPN, which knew that everything needed to be kept on the down low. As the saying goes, it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission, and ESPN likely now has some work to do to repair its relationship with the league.

Meanwhile, our old friend Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa, a well-known Gruden critic, has unloaded on the former Bucs coach via Twitter: “Now people should believe what I’ve been saying about that ****** all along,” Duemig says.

I can't stand Jon Gruden, but who wouldn't back out of an agreement with NFLN to be in a better situation with ESPN?

Eh, who cares. The paperwork wasnt signed yet. Kudos to ESPN for being smarter than the NFL network.

While a man's worth only his word, he didn't sign it. Still those are likely some bridges burned. Unless he turns out to be a star then it'll be forgiven.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think a man's word should mean something.

But from a scumbag like John Gruden, I'm not surprised.

He's always been a back-stabbing, self-serving jerk so why should things suddenly be any different?

He'll now use his ESPN gig to shill for any NFL job he can get.

I can understand both sides of the equation.

I would hardly call that reneging. He didn't sign the contract and received a much better offer in the meantime. It's a no-brainer.

Not a fan or hater of the coach, but I found him to be the most intersting commentator on draft weekend. I'll be shocked and deeply saddened if he is not a step up from Kornheiser.

In every transaction I've ever done, my word has been my commitment to agree to a given term once it's placed in writing. Which is pretty common practice for a legal agreement. The terms of the contract itself, had NFLN presented it quickly enough, probably required modifications to be made in writing.

It's not cool to throw around a term like scumbag when you don't have any real details about what transpired or how. If NFLN is angry at anyone, it should be at themselves for not getting the written commitment once a deal in principle had been struck.

*Shrugs* This is such a nothing situation to me. He hadn't signed any deal so, really, what does it matter? NFL network didn't get their deal with him signed quickly enough and someone came along and gave him a better offer and he took it.

Also, since I don't read the gossip sheets, or the dirt sites, or whatever I'm kind of interested as to what exactly Gruden has done in his career that has made some of the fans here call him slimy, and act like he's a backstabbing liar and that he's always done a bunch of underhanded things in his career.

Are there some quality stories to do with this or is this just people saying things because they personally don't like the guy or something?

That moniker isn't based solely on this most recent situation, but more on Gruden's entire body of work.

He's stabbed plenty of people in the back before and he will again.

His moniker is well-earned.

I'm glad he did, otherwise we'd still have Kornheiser.

Now, that would qualify as a scumbag move.

Let's see: work for what amounts to a regional broadcast+ satellite subscribers for NFLN or

MNF on ESPN a guaranteed national audience?

Gruden made the smart choice.

How many players would play the game with only a verbal agreement? If it is not on paper it is not a deal.
