Just 36 hours before Julius Peppers becomes an unrestricted free agent, a new report says the Panthers tried hard to keep him in Carolina.

Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com is reporting that the Panthers made at least three attempts to get a deal done with Peppers, and that the final offer was a long-term deal worth somewhere close to $14 million a year.

It was shortly after Peppers turned that deal down that the Panthers said publicly that they'd let Peppers test free agency.

Peppers apparently think he's going to get more than $14 million a year. Given how rampant tampering is in the NFL, it's possible that Peppers' agent has already been told that he'll be receiving an offer of more than $14 million a year as soon at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Or it's possible that Peppers will only get something in the $12 million to $13 million a year range, and all of a sudden the offer he turned down from the Panthers won't sound so bad.

Maybe he wants to get like 10 million per year and win.

He's not happy anymore in Carolina. He'll take $2 million/year less to play OLB in a 34. He'd also prolong his career doing so and in the long run make more $ that way.

Plus add to his sack credentials in case he wants to make a run at the hall, which every player would want.

If it was about money he would take the $14 million/year because he's not going to get more than that anywhere else.

I think Napoleon in Washington has already told him that he'll pay more.

Someone on the national ESPN radio was saying the other day that there was a lot of mutual interest between the Eagles and him.

If the high bid plays a 43, we'll never hear about this 34 OLB stuff again.

who knows how that $14 mil a year is structured, for all we know, it could be incredibly back loaded. IMO, he'll go to the highest bidder. Unless he goes to NE or PHI (only contenders I believe are interested), it's about the $$$

This Michael David Smith sounds clueless.

How many years is the contract for?
How much is guaranteed?
Backloading?
Playoff team?
Climate? Taxes?
Incentives?

Jeesh....

Lovie is desperate in Chicago so I could see him going there. OF course Danny Boy will try. No way the Eagles will put up that kind of money.

Commanders will likely pay more if thats what hes being offered there and I'm sure he and his agent know this.

It'd be awfully hard for the Saints to be in the race.

The new "lose 1, gain 1" rules pretty much eliminate them from the get go.
