RUMORS FLY OF PIOLI TO CLEVELAND

Posted by Mike Florio on December 27, 2008, 5:29 p.m.

At a time when the Cleveland media primarily is focusing on the question of whether Browns coach Romeo Crennel will be abruptly terminated following the team’s season finale in Pittsburgh, the bigger question in some circles is whether G.M. Phil Savage will be getting the shoe, too.

Per a league source, there’s a rumor linking Patriots V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli to the G.M. position in Cleveland.

If the Patriots don’t qualify for the playoffs (they need to win and then have either the Jets beat the Dolphins or the Jaguars beat the Ravens), Pioli would immediately be available to be interviewed for any jobs entailing final say over the roster.

Though there were rumors that Pioli rejected overtures from the Browns when Savage was hired several years ago, it’s still not clear whether the Browns ever sought permission to interview him for the job.

This year, a buzz has been building regarding Pioli’s potential willingness to consider other jobs.

Not Savage, he's our trade partner.
On the other hand, it would be good to get Pioli out of cheaters land.

I was about to post that..

NO to Savage leaving Cleveland. I'll volunteer to start a petition. We can't get rid of our extra draft picks pipeline..

Interesting. I've wondered how long it would take before key pieces in the FO of the Patriots would start moving off to other teams.

By the way, all joking aside, there isn't a higher team position than GM and he's on a great team. Why would he even consider a lateral move? It isn't when you consider the success of the franchises.

I call bull on this.

Kraft can pay him more than Lerner. He's a fool if he let's him go.

Maybe Belicheck wants to be Coach and GM.

Because Belichick has always had final say on personnel decisions.

You get caught I'll raise money for your bail.

But don't do it at the Zone. All you'll raise is a couple of buttons and lint-covered cough drops.

You really don't know this??????: BB has been Coach and GM Day 1 since being hired in 2000. Pioli is VP Player Personel and reports into BB, Head of football operations/GM.

He's the V.P of player personnel with the Pat's. I am assuming that is different than a G.M. title and would not be considered a lateral move.
