SAN DIEGO CHARGERS TRAINING CAMP ONE-LINERS

Posted by Mike Florio on August 7, 2008, 11:50 a.m.

Rookie CB Antoine Cason had two interceptions during Wednesday night’s practice.

Charlie Whitehurst continues to be stuck on the depth chart as the No. 3 quarterback.

In the preseason opener, Coach Norv Turner will be keeping a close eye on S Paul Oliver, a 2007 supplemental draft pick who didn’t dress for a single game as a rookie.

OT Marcus McNeill (stinger) had an MRI and missed Wednesday night’s practice; if he can’t play in the preseason opener, L.J. Shelton will take McNeill’s place.

CB Antonio Cromartie thinks he can get 15 interceptions. (So do we, but only if the Chargers play the Chiefs and Raiders eight times each.)

C Jeremy Newberry, whose knees have no cartilage, has yet to practice twice in one day.

As the locker room was buzzing about the Favre trade, one player said, “Why do we care where he plays?” (And then, apparently, someone showed the guy the Chargers’ schedule, and pointed to Week Three.)

The Chargers got a 24-hour extension to sell the remaining 500 tickets needed to sell out Qualcomm Stadium for the Saturday night preseason opener against the Cowboys.

NT Jamal Williams practiced twice on Wednesday.

FB Andrew Pinnock emerged from the PUP list and participated in individual drills on Tuesday.

I sure hope TO embarrasses Antonio Cromartie come Saturday. :laugh2:

Nothing better than watching a big head get knocked down a rung or two!

Article on Cason .... It will be interesting to track his and Jenkins' respective careers in the coming years. I'm still not convinced Dallas made the right choice.

----

Part of Antoine Cason felt really good Wednesday night as he left the field following the team’s practice under the lights.

“I’m definitely encouraged,” Cason said after recording two interceptions during the workout. “I’m excited and happy about the way I’m playing. I’m having fun and learning a lot.”

Another part of him, the competitive side that helped make him the Jim Thorpe Award winner and a first-round draft pick, walked away a little disappointed.

“There are just some things I need to clean up,” Cason said. “There’s a lot of work to be done with my technique. There are a lot of little areas of my game that I really need to improve on. That’s just me getting out there and getting some extra work, doing the extra things it takes. I’ve got to just take it from there and be a student.”

A week and a half into training camp, Cason has turned eyes and impressed his coaches with his big-play ability. While he’s been hard on himself about his play, Head Coach Norv Turner has seen a lot to be happy about.

“Antoine’s doing real well,” Turner said. “He has a knack for getting around the ball and he has excellent hands. We’ve got another guy in the secondary that can really go get the football.”

Cason is making a case to be the team’s primary nickel back, and moving inside has been his biggest challenge during his first NFL training camp.

“It’s different,” Cason said. “The way you have to turn, the way you have to do things, the way you have to train your eyes and keep them out of the backfield. You have to read things differently. I’ve never played inside. Sometimes I take my corner things and apply them inside and you can’t do that. It’s a learning process. They’re out there coaching me hard, which is expected.”

The Chargers open their preseason Saturday night against the Dallas Cowboys, and Cason is expected to see plenty of action, which has him excited.

“Saturday is going to be a lot of fun,” Cason said. “Tomorrow I’ll clean up everything and be ready to go. It’ll be a good test to see where I’m at.”

Slot corner in the nickel on a blitzing team? Huh, I thought he was a "zone corner only" myself.

In addition to Cason looking good, I heard Herm say yesterday on FoxRadio that Brandon Flowers has looked really good. along w/ Jamaal Charles. Well it isn't like we haven't been hearing great things about Jenkins.

I'm afraid Marcus McNeil isn't going to have a very long career.
Yeah, MRI on his neck; sounds like the spinal stenosis problem may be creeping out already.

Herm must like bad singing. Is Chad Hutchinson in Chiefs camp?

only the cowboys can sell out an away preseason game.:star:

Tell me about it. I wonder how they divide up the Cowboys road pre-season games.

Home pre-season game against us is a valuable commodity.

Two reasons:
  1. We needed a CB
  2. He was the highest rated CB on the board.

doesn't mean he was the best option....I'm pretty sure Mendenhall was the highest rated RB when they picked Jones....

I suppose if you are looking at a zone CB (Samuel) or a press CB (Woodson)

why did we draft Jenkins again....

*Considered the best CB in the draft before the combine
*Cowboys believe he is the most ready to play CB from the draft
*Quick, fast corner who is also very physical with long arms.
