PFT: Texans still have 50-50 shot at keeping Mario Williams

When the Texans didn’t apply the franchise tag last Monday to linebacker Mario Williams, many assumed that the first pick in the 2006 draft would soon be picking his next team. While that may indeed be the case, the Texans aren’t out of the hunt to keep Williams, yet.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that, as of right now, there’s a 50-50 chance that Williams will remain with the Texans.

The next 24 hours will give a more clear picture. Within 24 hours or so after that, Williams will be free to leave.

There's about three other guys/positions we should be focusing on before a luxury like Williams. I'd love to get him, but interior O-line, cornerback and re-signing Robinson should take precedence.

I'm sorry but re-signing Robinson before Super Mario is bass ackwards!

That's fine if you disagree but keep in mind that if we address O-line and secondary first as we should it may not be practical salary-wise to pay Williams, ESPECIALLY if we still plan on keeping Spencer.

I'm just not that big on Robinson. I don't know why. He seemed to dissapear in games and only would appear when the play broke down, which was often with this line.

What I mean is I don't see it as a priority. We have plenty of young guys that need to play. My hope is Harris actually "gets it" this offseason.

My problem with Harris is that he's a 5'10" receiver with average speed. Not many guys his size who lack at least good speed ever make much of an impact at this level.

They have to at least try to keep him. A near elite player who is just entering his prime years...

I really doubt the Texans will match some of the offers that will come Williams way.

They have problems as it is. I think it is less than a 30% chance they keep Williams

My problem with Harris is that he's a 5'10" receiver with average speed. Not many guys his size who lack at least good speed ever make much of an impact at this level.

But I see him as that slot guy we have been lacking since Kmart. He's more of Welker type, not fast but quick. Plays the position like a rb coming out of the backfield. That's my hopes for him anyway. I see no reason for him to run a pattern longer then 15 yds. Austin and Dez going deep and Harris streaking across the middle.

90% of statistics are made up. They in theory could sign him today. They could've signed him anytime in the last couple of years. maybe they finally made him am offer?

Perhaps this is a stretch.......but maybe his "camp" floating this out there is a sign that the market isn't quite as robust as they would like it to be.

It is. So is upgrading OG given how many options are out there at guard that represent clear upgrades both in FA and in the draft.

CB is a legitimate point, though. Those guys are valuable, and the good ones always go fast.

I hope you're right, but even then you can never have enough good receivers in today's NFL. Even if Robinson is just abroken play receiver, he and Romo are almost always on the same page it seems and he made some of the biggest plays of the year last season for us.

With Dez still in limbo between "good" and "great" and Miles Austin struggling with injuries last year, I'd feel much more comfortable with Robinson back.

The headline says the Texans have a "50-50 shot", while the article concludes by saying "chances are that he’ll be holding up come Tuesday night or Wednesday a new jersey, in a new city.".

Once he's available in free agency, I don't see how they keep him. If they were willing to pay up the money he is going to be offered they would have already thrown it at him.
