PFT: Troy Aikman calls out Jerry for a 30-year Super Bowl drought

Agree 100%.........it's no longer about blaming players and/or coaches. It has taken me a while to see it, but this is on Jerry 100%. At a very minimum, he should have a high-level assistant GM with some authority working under him and NO, not McClay. He is also part of the problem IMO.

Troy Aikman: Cowboys’ championship drought is hard to fathom

Published August 17, 2026 05:06 PM

“He knows why we won with Jimmy Johnson, and I believe the reason we won is because every player in that locker room felt, and I think knew, that Jimmy was calling the shots, that Jimmy was in control of their destiny, so if you didn’t do what you were supposed to do by Jimmy’s standards, you were held accountable,” Aikman said. “He was a great evaluator of talent, he drafted those players, he built those teams, he was a tremendous general manager — I say general manager, he was a tremendous evaluator of talent and in many ways he was the de facto general manager. I think he was probably better in that role than he was even as a head coach, as good as he was there.”

Nuff Said!

Wow ....... you were on Cowboy sites in 94 and 95?

I do not think my parents even had internet then ...... that was pre google
I remember back then the only purpose I could really find for the internet was to find Cowboys related material. I built my first computer because it was cheaper than buying one.

Not sure of your whole attempt at putting lipstick on a pig thing here while oddly deflecting to a HOF former Dallas QB some sort of blame or guilt trip or whatever, BUT the 5 total playoff wins in 30 years with the same team builder in place is self explanatory.

The team builder is very poor at his job.
Not only is he very poor at his job but he employs his whole family doing jobs that they are not qualified to do which compounds the problem

Yep. Well said.
And will be adding more years to the drought by continuing to do that.

Future is bright.

Everyone knows the biggest problem is Jones and the entire family being entrenched in day to day operations.

The 2nd biggest problem over this 30 year drought are the quarterbacks they’ve trotted out to lead this team.

Carter, Henson, Romo, Prescott and everyone since Aikman..have proven to be unqualified to get the team as so much past the divisional round.

So until they draft a true winner at the position it will be more of the same.

All true.

i was live on prodigy back then

Parcells SUCKED. He was way over-the-hill by the time Jerry brought him over. Ol' 34 - 32. That was his record as a Dallas Cowboys head coach. That's not the record of a very good coach. That's the record of a very average head coach, and his teams were exactly that: AVERAGE. I would not include Parcells' name in the same sentence with the word STRONG.

Aikman is a blowhard who thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.

If getting to a Super Bowl and winning it is the metric he’s using, how many teams can say they haven’t won or haven’t even been to one?

How many division championships and competitive teams, where you know the team can compete, have the Cowboys had in 30 years?

Let’s not rewrite history to make it seem they were all bad teams. All you can ask is if they can compete, everything else is a crapshoot.

Jimmy Johnson was hired by the Dolphins because they thought he had the “secret sauce” and he even had Dan Marino. How many championships did he win after he left Jerry?

None

Troy should put his money where his mouth is and run a team and see how hard it really is the be the last team standing.

The worst thing that ever happened to the Cowboys was Jerry winning so soon into his tenure. It made him think he had the right stuff to win continuously and underestimate or completely disregard the impact other people had on the team's success.
he'll soon be 84 and i like to think he's opening the wallet more than before. Jones is well aware of the drought and time for him is critical. Wouldn't be surprised if another impact signing is made over next couple weeks.

I’ll call out Aikman for wanting David LaFleur instead of Tony G.
Not true ........ Tony was picked 13

We picked 22

Tony named his top two and they went with the one they could get.

David Lefleur was on his way to being a great player and injured his back with 3 herniated discs and was never the same and could not pass a physical.

He was never injured in college.

Cowboy fans can only hope.

He's the worst GM in team sports history. No other GM in any sport was ever able to keep a job long enough to go 30 years without even one championship appearance. They all got fired long before it got to that point.
