Add Gil Brandt to the list of people that think the Cowboys take Smith.

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 11, 2011, 5:39 PM EDT

When I read MMQB this morning, I considered doing a post on Peter King’s report that the Cowboys “do love” USC tackle Tyron Smith and that they are “seriously considering” taking him ninth overall.

King wasn’t the first to make the Smith-Cowboys connection. FOXSportsSouthwest.com mentioned it a few weeks back, and SI.com’s Tony Pauline said Smith was basically atop the Cowboys’ board.

We held off on posting King’s note for a little while because he was responsible for half the content on PFT this morning and we started to feel guilty about it. But now Gil Brandt of NFL.com gave us another reason to write about the topic.

Brandt wrote the Cowboys would “probably” take Smith if they are just looking for the best player at No. 9 overall, with defensive end J.J. Watt another possibility. Brandt doesn’t think the team will look for a defensive back.

Sometimes a certain team and player combination just gains momentum through the draft process. At this point, it would be a mild surprise if Smith wasn’t Dallas’ pick.

It makes sense, I still think ,Dallas makes a play for Peterson, if they cant move up I can see T. Smith with a star and would be very happy.

Tyron Smiths value looks high for Dallas.

Not only would Tyron be the starting RT from the day he stepped onto the podium, he'd also be the backup LT.

I was thinking the same

Id this draft "buzz" is true, then I'm disappointed at the Cowboys tipping their hands. Jerry has never had a good poker face.

not sure about that Jerry looks like he was poked in the face quite often :D

I just wish the draft would get here. I'm tired of all the speculating.

No kidding. It's almost as if everyone's seen the Boys draft board. I really doubt we're looking at Tyron Smith now

Smith would not be my 1st choice but he would be a very good addition to the team. We all have our own views of who the Cowboys should take or if they should move up or down but in the end if we can get a quality player who feels a need then I'm going to be happy. Just not dancing in the street as I would if Peterson fell to the Cowboys. :laugh2:

It has nothing to do with teams reading Dallas draft board, but just looking at a few basic facts.

#1.) Dallas has a HUGE need at offensive line.
#2.) Dallas has heavily scouted Smith
#3.) Around the #9 spot is where Smith is "projected" to go anyway.
#4.) Given where the other players that are good values and fill needs are projected to get drafted. Smith is the best player available and he also happens to fill a HUGE need....

If he's still the main buzz 3 to 5 days before the draft than it's for real.

Our #1 target gets out every year somehow.

Last year it was Earl Thomas.

Sporting News has the cowboys taking Peterson in the 1st, 2nd - Jason Pinkston - OT, 3d - Jerrell Powe - DT:starspin

It isnt rocket science people...every year if you do enough research you can pretty much peg each team's interested in certain players, especially the teams in the top-10

Not a bad draft, but the Sporting News is very inaccurate every year

If Dallas takes him at #9 your taking a RT aweful early. We just dont know yet if he could play LT...its a gamble. He is great athlete but for my money...if Dallas is convinced Free is there future LT and they want a new RT....then trade back and draft Gabe Carimi from Wisconsin. He is big and nasty. Dallas does well with these nasty RT in the mold of Colombo, Eric Williams.
