NFL Fan Zone? It might not be a horrible idea ... or it might
Do we have any soccer fans out there? Last night, I finished up with my work around 11 and decided to turn on the TV. I am usually a Food Network/History Channel/A&E guy, at least that time of night, unless there's a good college hoops game on.
But occasionally, I'll flip around to see if there's a replay of a soccer match that probably happened something like 13 hours earlier in England. I have become more of a fan of the game the past 3-4 years, and though I am a mild supporter of Chelsea, my new favorite player might be Aliaksandr Hleb.
So they have this show called "Premier League Fan Zone." Have you seen it? It's basically two dopes, one fan of each club, doing the "broadcast" -- quotes very much needed -- of a Premier League game. There's a lot of "oh, man!" and "bloody hell!" and things of that nature, which give it an authentic, amateurish feel. They go back and forth, making fun of each other's club and players, and they sing, taunt and chide all while the action is going on.
Could this work for football? Boy, you'd have some interesting shows for Jets-Patriots, Cowboys-Eagles and the like. There might actually be a market for this. We're in a blogging era, anyway -- you're here reading this, aren't you? -- and the fan now has as much of a voice in sports media as they ever have. So why not a TV broadcast? It wouldn't be educational at all, but it might be stupid fun.
Now, the tempo of soccer might lend better to this type of thing. The back-and-forth nature of the game works right in sync with the punch-counterpunch derision of the two lugnuts in the booth. Soccer matches also last under two hours, maybe 100 minutes of game action. A football game usually takes about three hours. The idea might get stale about mid-second quarter.
Thoughts? Would you care to watch some bozo, who might be pretty funny, make fun of another team during a replay of a game? Or is that just too much garbage to take?
