Cowboys QB Brad Johnson will get first-team reps this week to see how he fares with better offensive talent around him and give the Cowboys a look at the frightening prospect of what things would be like without Tony Romo. But we hear that the team already has done its homework on Buccaneers QB Chris Simms, who is expected to be playing elsewhere this season, and has done some scouting on Dolphins QBs John Beck and Josh McCown, at least one of whom will be cut. -- Pro Football Weekly

Whole PFW blurb...

Cowboys might be looking to upgrade backup QB

The preseason-opening loss to the Chargers was revealing on many fronts, mostly about the poor performances by the second-team players. And that was especially clear at quarterback, where Brad Johnson confirmed what many have said for a while. Despite Johnson’s experience and Super Bowl-winning pedigree, his lack of arm strength has been painfully obvious.

Johnson will get first-team reps this week to see how he fares with better offensive talent around him and give the Cowboys a look at the frightening prospect of what things would be like without Tony Romo.

But we hear that the team already has done its homework on Buccaneers QB Chris Simms, who is expected to be playing elsewhere this season, and has done some scouting on Dolphins QBs John Beck and Josh McCown, at least one of whom will be cut. Despite reports that the Cowboys liked Beck coming out of Brigham Young in 2006, we hear the scouting staff — headed at the time by current Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland — wasn’t all that wild about him.

BP and Ireland owe us 1 for the Ayodele throw in.

I expect a trade for Beck or McCown.

7th rounder in a couple of years would be fine.

WHere are we in waivers 28th or so.

Lets just sign him up after he's cut...No draft picks for Miami. Do you really think another team will pick him up so close to the start of the season ?

The more I read about Beck, the more he sounds like Henson-without-a-mitt.

I'd rather go for McCown.

Dallas probably would have kept Aaron Glenn around if Terry Glenn was placed on IR last year. Moore would have still been cut.

I'm not so sure. (Aaron) Glenn's release last year was a whole lot less about numbers, I think.

i would take McCown in a heartbeat, Beck would be my 2nd choice, and in no way shape or form would i like Simms. after all that said, i would take almost anyone over Brad Johnson at this point. these were my feelings even last year in camp. :starspin

I would prefer to have 3 QBs.

Romo & Johnson are a given.

In order as the 3rd guy I'd take...

1. McCown
2. Beck
3. Simms
4. Bartel (very grudgingly)

I hope that little conflicting report doesn't mean that the scouts didn't like him, but Jerry or one of his cronies did...

But I do know that a lot of people liked Beck. Seems kind of early in his career to already decide that a guy like him can't play.

We should have picked up Joey Harrington last year.

I know he's not a great qb but I think with his youth, agility and arm strength could make a very formidable back-up.

I've often said Brad Johnson is too similar to Bledsoe (pocket qb, age).

We made it very clear we wanted mobility, so...Brad Johnson is everything we don't want in a quarterback's ability not personality. He's a great competitor but so was Bledsoe.
