PFW Speculation: Newman To Commanders, Rogers to Cowboys?

Eric Edholm, senior editor at Pro Football Weekly, ran a story yesterday in which he discussed the future of Commanders CB Carlos Rogers. Our friends at Bleeding Green Nation had previously detailed how Rogers can't wait to get out of Washington. It appears that Rogers would like to remain in the NFC East with either the Cowboys or the Eagles, as he thinks "it would be fun to play against the Commanders twice a year."

Edholm argues that both the Cowboys and Eagles, who are popular favorites to go after Nnamdi Asomugha, could have Rogers as an alternative plan. Rogers is an unrestricted free agent this year, regardless of how a new CBA turns out. Edholm speculates that since the Commanders don't currently have an adequate replacement on their roster, they might go after Terence Newman if the Cowboys sign a top corner.

At this stage, this is nothing more than pure speculation. Dave wrote yesterday that "it sounds like Newman is being thrown under the bus by multiple sources. That $8 million salary and his age, 33, could work against him." At the same time, the Commanders look to be back to their big spending ways: "We prepared for various options and will be able to be as aggressive as any team in the league based on what the rules are," Commanders G.M. Bruce Allen told the Washington Post on Friday. It's unlikely that anyone would be willing to trade for Newman's contract, but you never know with the Commanders. However, if Newman were cut in Dallas, he might be a viable option in D.C....

Newman is still pretty hard too throw against he will have hiccup every now n then...

Besides he knows our players and team to well....trade him too afc if you are goin to deal him

If Newman was healthy I am not sure I would consider this an upgrade at the position.

It's not. Rogers is a slightly below average - average cornerback, with no hands.

Yeah no way I see it, although Rogers is 3 years younger than TNew, I would rather go with Nnamdi if I had to go at someone that is 30.

I would rather just keep TNew and go after his replacment in the draft or another FA who is better and younger than Rogers preferably.

A healthy TNew > Rogers

What is this mythical creature you mention, the healthy TNew.

I agree that if Newman is healthy he is still a very good CB, the problem is he just isn't likely to stay healthy very long or possibly at all. That being said I don't think we are that likely to cut him this year, unless we really have to do some work to get under the salary cap.

What a reach of a story.

How about we take care of the safety positions first, and see how our corners play with a real free safety? My guess is probably more like '09 when we had Ken Hamlin. Just a guess. 16ppg, top 10 passing defense, etc. Maybe? Anyone?

If we ever make it past the end of the world predictions and back to football, then Rob Ryan will be fixing teams taking advantage of a bend to never break and point accumulation defense.

Last seasons, teams moved right up the gut on the Cowboys as there just wasn't an umbrella to that defense. Fix that, and allow some of the unpredictable to be removed up front, and things change completely.

This starts at safety, agreed.

Oh look, another baseless "newman is injury prone" post

5 of Newman's 8 years in Dallas have been compeletely injury free. He missed 3 games in '07, 6 games in '08 and played all 16 games with minor injuries last season.

No way I would be happy picking rogers over tnew. Terrible article and idea

When both are healthy, Newman is by far the better corner

Well TNew hasn't been healthy for a while, but I still don't want Carlos. If a player is as good at a present point, or if its even debatable, yet the the other (Carlos) is younger........what happens when Carlos is 33. I don't wanna see that.

Nnamdi is better right now (not talking about the money involved), and Nnamdi's downslope will still be better than TNew right now in 3 years. I'm an engineer, sorry if i see things in curves, but its just true.

I just don't see that the effort is worth it for Carlos, and this article is full of bs.

This doesnt even make sense Newman at 33 is better than Rogers now I dont see Dallas cutting Newman and signing Namdi or no hands Rogers, nice speculation though....LOL.

He's played in like 94% of the games in his career, not including postseason. It's a non-issue that fans won't let go of.

I'm hoping that the front office isn't listening to fans. They appeared to have listened to fans on the "Alan Ball can play FS - cut Hamlin" deal and that got us exactly where we are now.
