DE Chris Canty got the first hurdle out of the way, and that was signing the team’s one-year restricted tender of $2.017 million last week. But the team and Canty are hopeful that a long-term deal can keep the emerging star in Dallas past 2009, when he would become an unrestricted free agent.

The Cowboys have handed out more than $130 million worth of extensions and multi-year deals for Terence Newman, Marion Barber and Terrell Owens this spring and still have Canty and FS Ken Hamlin left as major players to deal with past this season.

Canty blossomed as a run stopper and even showed a little pass-rush prowess last season and is viewed by the staff as a critical piece of the team’s front seven, likely more so than Marcus Spears, who was drafted three rounds before Canty in 2005. Canty also has participated fully in the team’s offseason activities, which team sources say might give him a slight advantage over Hamlin — who has remained away from the facility and has not signed his franchise tender — in terms of getting a deal done first.

Canty really started coming on last year. Would like to see him be the next Cowboy we sign--partly because of his participation with his teammates in our weight conditioning program, the OTAs & the minicamp. He didn't have do but he chose to do it because he wanted to be at VR with his teammates. Wasn't happy when MBIII stayed away until he got his contract.

While it would be nice to sign Canty to an extension, it is critical they get Hamlin's signature on some paper. FS was a serious weakness for so many years that finally became a sttrength. We forget how important Hamlin is.

Watkins might be able to step it up, but I wouldn't risk it.

Resign Hamlin and get Matt Jones. Championship!

I have to disagree, the money for safeties has gotten out of control it would be better to either go with one of the other guys next year or draft one next year.

Exactly. He is going to cost too much. Enjoy Hamlin this year, because he wont be here next year. Not to mention we can draft a FS next year or move Henry to FS.

Or if Roy under achieves again he is cut and we sign Hamlin and move him to SS, his natural position. But I think this is Hamlins last year.

D-line hasn't really been a strength of ours either. I think its more important to keep Canty than Hamlin.

Canty wants to be here - getting him signed to a long-term extension should be a priority.

Hamlin doesn't really, really want to be here - he could have signed his tender while trying to work out a long-term deal if he really wanted to be at VR. I say let him go next year once Brown or Watkins is ready to take over the position full-time.

Perhaps this has been covered and I missed it, but what's up with this man love you have for Matt Jones.

I have two sons age 9 and 5. I'm really fond of them but it pales in comparison to your feelings for Jones. :) I mean how good can his bath water taste?

don't worry about Chris he will sign whenever. Hamlin is the one needed to get done quick and Hamlin has been in contact with the coaches to make sure he is up to speed. So I think he really wants to be here it is just a contract issue.:D

I disagree - if he really wanted to be here he would just sign his tender and participate while trying to work out a deal. If worse comes to worse and the two sides cannot agree he will just end up signing the deal anyway to play this year. Under this scenario he is better served by showing up, having a good season and then being rewarded next year as it is unlikely that he would be franchised two years in a row.
