IMHO: I've watched every throw for the past 2 games, and I go back to Drew Boylhart's analysis of him pre-draft. Drew stated that Rivers would never be more than a backup QB, because his arm strength was so weak. He stated that he shouldn't be chosen before the 3rd round, because he would never be a legit #1 QB because his mechanics were so poor that he can't get anything on the deep ball. After hearing how good Rivers was this season I thought the analysis must have been way off, so I started watching SD's games in order to analyze Rivers for myself. After watching him exclusively the last 2 games, I have to agree with the analysis. Rivers can only throw from the pocket when he can step up into it. He has little/no mobility, and can't throw on the run. If he leaves the pocket, his mechanics don't allow him to get anything on the ball, and he has trouble throwing it past 10 yards. Just look at the KC game last week. He tried to throw outside the pocket and threw 2 ducks that were INT about 10 yards down field. Teams have figured out that if you get him out of the pocket he severly affected. Furthermore, it really frustrates him when this is done to him, because he knows he can't throw on the move. Just watch him during the playoffs, and you'll see this kink in his armor that teams will exploit more and more. If you don't believe me just watch him for yourself.
1) He can't run (Bledsoe has more mobility than this guy.
2) He can't throw on the run.
3) He has trouble throwing the ball when moving laterally, because he can only throw the ball downfield in the pocket when he can step up and build momentum to throw the ball downfield.
4) He has little arm strength. Consequently, he puts little zip on the ball. All his throws are soft throws.
Don't believe me, don't believe the hype, just look for yourself and see if you see these same kinks as I do.
Again, JMHO.
