I just read an interesting article on theLandryHat on how important it is for dallas to find a good "single high safety". Philip Thomas seems perfect for what we're looking for. From what i understand, he excels in coverage and is coming off of a season ending injury which has caused his stock to drop significantly.

thoughts on him in the 2nd or 3rd?

He led the nation with 8 interceptions last year, he is a gamer, he seems to have recovered well from his injury.

He can actually play either safety position and he has a knack for finding the ball.

He had one bad game that people will bring up against Oregon, but as I stated Oregon made many safeties look silly this past year.

He is my 2nd round pick, I like him over all safeties, including Vaccaro.

Thomas isn't coming off a season ending injury, that was his junior year in 2011. He bounced back nicely this year and had 8 INT's . He isn't being held in all that high of regard because he doesn't have the greatest #'s on paper in terms of athletic ability.

But as far as him being a very great fit as our deep zone safety, I couldn't agree more. He has some of the best ball skills of any DB in the draft class. Great hands and just a nose for the ball. He may not be the type of FS that can cover the slot, but if asked to play a zone 15-20 yards off of the LOS I think he will excel. Would be a good value in the 2nd, and I think an absolutely great value in the 3rd.

A very good option if he is a main target for us could be to trade down in the 2nd and pick up an extra 4th or so and still be able to take Thomas. Could be a perfect scenario if we don't feel like he will make it to 80.

When I looked at the safeties they all seemed more like in the box types rather than centerfielders. He's the one exception. I think we really need a ballhawk back there with good instincts and he seems to be the closest in this class. If I remember right Matt Johnson had a lot interceptions in college of course that was against lesser competition but hey at least he showed a knack for it.
