Phillies Near Deal to Get Roy Oswalt From Astros

The Phillies and Astros have agreed to the players in a trade that would send Roy Oswalt to the NL champs, a source confirmed for The Post.

The deal is not complete as Oswalt has a no-trade clause and has to give his blessing. There have been mixed messages about if he is willing to play for a Northeast city. Oswalt also has might want his $16 million 2012 option picked up.

However, a source briefed on the deal described it as "very close" to completion.

Yep. I have always been a fan of Oswalt.

Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels is pretty strong 1-2-3, yet this trade does not happen if the Phillies kept Cliff Lee.

As somewhat of an Astro fan I just hope the Astros get some good prospects to help rebuild this team. I like Roy and wish him good luck and while some Astros fans are mad about this the way I see it is the Astros need alot of help and Oswalt can help this team more in a trade for young talent than remaining with the team

Yes. Oswalt wasn't going to be a part of the next contending Astros team anyway. If one of the minor-leagues is Singleton, the Astros made out very well indeed.

2:19 PM EST UPDATE: It now appears as though the two prospects in the Roy Oswalt deal are Anthony Gose and Vance Worley. Jonathan Singleton is in the starting lineup for the Phillies' A-ball team. If he were in the trade, he wouldn't be playing.

As I mentioned this morning, Worley is a 22 year-old starter who is 9-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 20 starts, all but one of which have come at AA. His strikeout numbers don't suggest he's an overpowering pitcher -- he has a 6.6 K/9 in his minor league career -- but he's decent enough. My guess is that he projects as a swingman/4th-5th starter-type.

Gose turns 20 on August 10th. He's currently hitting .263/.325/.385 in high-A ball. Which is basically what he did over the last two years in Rookie and low-A. He's apparently fast -- he stole over 70 bases last season -- but this year he's been caught 27 times against 36 steals. Not what you want to see.

Worley is potentially useful. Gose is no blue chipper. While we'll await official word to pass final judgment, this looks like a big, big win for the Phillies and a mid-level starter (Happ) away from being a straight salary dump for Houston.

the kid was amazing last year..I dont know much about him other than what I saw and from what I saw, he definitely has the potential to be a stud..here are his #s from last year

He was second in ROY voting and ran out of gas at the end of season. He was put in the bullpen in World Series. He has been hurt most of season and just got off DL.

The Phillies have completed a three-player trade with the Houston Astros for righthander Roy Oswalt. Lefthanded pitcher J.A. Happ, outfielder Anthony Gose and infielder Jonathan Villar are going to Houston. Villar, who has been removed from single-A Lakewood's lineup tonight, is hitting .272 with two home runs and 36 RBIs. Villar, 19, has 42 errors in 99 games as Lakewood's shortstop but projects as a corner infielders down the line. Gose, who turns 20 on Aug. 10, is hitting .263 with four home runs and 20 RBIs for single-A Clearwater. He has 36 stolen bases but has been caught stealing 27 times.​

Happ, whom the Phillies have injury concerns about, has made three starts this season after finishing as runner-up National League Rookie of the Year. He is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in three starts. Happ, 27, strained his left elbow on April 15. Happ was running on the warning track at Citizens Bank Park around 3 p.m. and was pulled aside by pitching coach Rich Dubee and the two entered a tunnel down the rightfield line. The monetary details of the trade are still unknown.
The two teams have reportedly agreed on a way to handle the remainder of Oswalt's salary. ESPN is reporting the Phillies have asked the Astros to pay a "significant portion" of the $5 million Oswalt is due for the remainder of this season plus the $16 million Oswalt is due in 2011. Then, of course, there is the $16 million club option for 2012. That has been the sticking point all along, a baseball source told The Inquirer earlier in the week. ​

"Oswalt has [Astros general manager] Ed Wade and everybody else at his mercy because of that no-trade clause," the source said. "I know the Phillies thought they were close to having it done last week, but I think the difference was that option year."​

Update: The Astros will pay $11 million of the $23 million Oswalt is due between now and end of 2011 season. Gose looks like he is being traded to Toronto, though I am unsure for whom. Oswalt starts tomorrow night for Phillies!
