Philip Rivers weighs in on lockout

5/10/2011 12:41:52 PM

Kevin Acee and Sharon Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune report Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers made a rare public appearance Saturday and was compelled in a Q&A with the gathered crowd to do something he’s been loath to do in the past two months – speak directly about the lockout.

The Chargers quarterback echoed what teammates have said -- that NFL players, by and large, are not entirely clued in to what is happening in their labor battle with owners.

“We don’t know anything,” Rivers told the crowd. “I’m just waiting for them to tell us when to go back to work.”

Rivers worked out at Chargers headquarters the day the lockout was lifted and even organized workouts away from the facility in March. As many as two dozen Chargers have showed up for those sessions, which are held four days a week, and Rivers and others have called the workouts highly productive. Several other players are working out on their own or in smaller groups at various locales around the county.

“Now if this thing carries on to training camp, it'll be a little weird not having had the offseason but yet be that close to playing a game,” he said.
“It's been quite a different offseason, to say the least,” Rivers said before taking the stage. “… We've managed it the best we can. I think it's still early. I've said that a bunch the last few months, but it is still early. But as we get into May and June, football stuff will need to pick up, and we have a plan in place to make that happen.”

I guess Rivers is not in that top 10% that D.Smith works for and does not get all the secret memos.

I would bet that only about 2%, hell, maybe less, of all NFL players really have some clue, not all but some, of what is actually taking place.

As good a talker as he is on the field, you would think a leader like Rivers could talk more than a couple of dozen players into showing up for workouts.

They won't follow him till he turns his hat backwards.

I'm guessing if you only have 32 owners, they will know what's up. BUt when you have thousands of players, some folks will be left out of the loop. JMO

Actually, the top 10% of players know Smith is looking out for them in particular and those same players have nice endorsement deals and plenty of money in the bank so they don't even have to bother with the details of the negotiations.

Must be nice to be in that top 10 percent ..

So 90% of players don't have "plenty of money in the bank?" And now the 10%-ers don't even have to bother with the details of the negotiations because they know Smith is looking out for them.

Or is it Smith is only looking to make a name for himself? If that's the case, why even care about the 10%? He should just do whatever the hell he wants.

Is it possible to troll your own website? Maybe we should coin a new term.

Why do you have "-Reality" at the end of your posts?

The same reason other posters do the same with their usernames.

And I would probably have to assume that 99% of these players don't understand complicated legal issues in the first place.

Well its kind of annoying. Its not like we can't see Reality's username in his handle. We know who wrote that post. It seems sort of self-promoting.

What is that suppose to mean? I'm not saying they are dumb or anything. The vast majority of them don't have legal training or experience in this sort of stuff.

It's kind of like when people go to a doctor and ask for medication to treat a particular illness. They don't know how or why it works, they just trust their doctor to make the appropriate recommendation to get the job done.

That is why they hired DeMaurice Smith, whom has legal training, after the owners opted out of the CBA.

Yes, we can call it "I don't agree with what you're saying, so I'll label it as trolling".

That about the gist of it?
