Anyone remember what they ran in SD? 3 or 4 man front?

I can't recall, either way - but based on Phillips insistence on playing to his players strengths, it may not be the same here anyways. I have been able to gather, from trollling the Chargers forums, that he does something Parcells always preached, but mostly only payed lip service to - and that's substitution. He would rest Jamal Williams sometimes leading up to the half, when they were in their nickel trying to play a soft zone to prevent a quick score from the other team before half. He'd take out anyone, even Merriman, to keep them fresh. With the depth we *allegedly* have along the front seven, that could be a real boon for him.

But the fronts - I dunno. My guess is that varies depending on whether Jamal was on the field. They could play a 2 or 3 man nickel front with him, but probably had to go 4 without.

Not that I'm the authority on SD, but I really thought they stayed in a 3 man line even in the nickel. Seems like in watching a couple of their games, I remember that being a difference between them and what Parcells did.

I'm a fan of the 3-3-5...think that could work well with all of the speed we could have on the field at LB.

With those 3 LB's being Ware and Carpenter (if he wins the SOLB job) and Burnett in the middle because of his athleticism and coverage ability.

That would leave Ware and Carpenter in to get after the QB, too.

If Spears plays as well as I think he will in a 1 gap system instead of a 2 gap, then he should really be able to get some pressure from the DE spot. At the other DE, Hatcher can really get after the QB too.

That would put Ware, Hatcher, Fergie, Spears, and Carpenter rushing the QB and Burnett plus five DB's dropping back into coverage.

Sounds good to me.
