Pickens not blocking

Dallas was inside the Eagle 10 and Pickens gets a huge penalty for trying to rip a players helmet off. Terrible technique.
And Ferguson almost was killed the next play. Got those yards back.

This is disturbing.. It takes everyone on run plays to make it a success. Him playing like this could cost us a big run.

I do think the play where Pickens committed the penalty is more indicative of blocking responsibilities. Instead of running his route to take the defender out of the play, he had a direct lead block on that one. He broke down in front of Blankenship, but Blankenship went around him instead of trying to go through him. So Pickens grabbed him and pulled him down.

With wide receiver blocking, it's important to look at the impact on the play. If their role is simply to keep a defender away from the play, they are not going to do much blocking. If they have to seal an edge or lead, then they are going to engage more. Pickens could definitely have done more than he did, but fan expectations for receiver blocking is unrealistic when you view every play. Receivers are not always going to block a defender they do not think has a chance of making a play.

It looks bad, but let's be honest. Dallas didn't trade a 3rd round pick for him to block people. I know every player needs to do their job and Pickens failed on this play. But I would like to know if this went on the entire game, or was this just a cherry picked play by someone trying to drive home an agenda?

That play is on there. Pickens broke down in front of the defender and maybe expected him to try to go through him. Blankenship went around him instead and Pickens grabbed him. I don't think he was trying to rip his helmet off. He was just trying to keep him from making a play and grabbed his shoulder and the side of his helmet. He definitely needed to do a better job there, and certainly not commit a penalty. He appears to prefer to wall off defenders, but if you are not going to engage them, then things like the penalty are going to happen because the defender isn't going to say, "I'm walled off. Guess I can't do anything."

It wasn't just Pickens. Lamb was lackadaisical blocking as well. Pathetic effort from both. If either of them thinks the ball isn't coming their way, they just jog through the motions.

The big mistake may very well be paying Lamb but not Micah. You can't have the bell cow on your football team being a low effort jag when he's not getting the ball.

I think there are seven plays on the clip and we ran it 14 times, so there could be seven instances where he blocked just fine. Plus, there is only one play on there where his blocking was actually a problem, the one where he pulled down the defender.

I'd prefer to see him engage on some of those "blocks" to make sure his defender doesn't get in on the play, but I think a mountain is being made out of a molehill at the moment. Let's see how he does when the play is coming at him and he needs to make a block to help spring the runner.

A bit of a reach. There's only a few WRs in the NFL that get known for blocking. You can see that often in NFL games. Let's be careful. This narrative requires a larger sample size. I'm just glad it was Cee Dee with the drops. Pickens would have required security from this Board.
Baloney. Pickens jogged through patterns, refused to block, and one of the rare occasions he did block was his weird bulldog penalty. He showed exactly why Pitt was willing to trade such a talented player.

Now that's what you call a half *** effort! I really hope that the coaching staff sees this and it gets addressed!

You think he is diving into a pile in a contract year?

He is the perfect player for a Jerry squad….a soft business decision maker. All his toughness comes from his mouth.

No problem though. Didn’t need that high third rounder to build a roster that can eventually win, we will just use free agency as usual.
Who was the Cowboys' cornerback that was drafted a few years ago, he made a lot of business decisions and refused to make a tackle.

You hate how well we're set up for the future.

Pointless because they're not going to do anything about it because when you have a Pickens on your team, it allows CeeDee to go off and vice versa.

That's why you don't pay someone like him top money and its an attitude thing. Perhaps why Steelers got rid of him.

I look at it this way. If De'Vonta Smith, the living toothpick, willingly blocks, than any WR should be able to block.

Everybody talking about seeing this in film session, what do you think is gonna happen?

The staff shows him and tells him he needs to block and his reply is “oh, I didn’t know I was supposed to do that. I’ll do that from now on”.

lol, he knows he’s supposed to block and chooses not to.

Cut his snaps and when he starts asking why (cause he will) tell him it’s cause he won’t block. Gonna be hard to push his next contract to its max when he’s sitting on the bench. Give it a few weeks and when he realizes millions are being flushed he’ll figure it out.
