BOSTON -- New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda admitted to using pine tar on the baseball during the second inning of Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, but said he did it not to cheat, rather to ensure he did not hit anyone with an errant pitch.

"It was a really cold night, and in the first inning I [couldn't] feel the ball," Pineda said. "I don't want to like, hit anybody, so I decided to use it."

Using a foreign substance on the baseball is a violation of Major League Baseball rule 8.02. According to an MLB spokesman, there is no mandatory suspension

The moron got his mulligan 10 days ago. He got a warning shot across the bow, no harm no foul, but just wasn't smart enough to be a bit more subtle.

The people that should be most embarrassed right now are the idiot Yankees coaches that let him go out there with so much pine tar on him you could smell it in the stands.

The question, at least to me is, why is it a big deal still in MLB? I don't really have a problem with his getting tossed. The rule is there and he, as you say, was not smart enough to avoid the situation but, it's kind of a silly rule to still have on the books IMO. All pitchers throw Pine Tar on the ball when it's cold. Catchers wear it on their shin guards and simply throw the ball back with Pin Tar on it. MLB knows about it and they allow it. They should simply get rid of the rule IMO. It servers little purpose anymore.

Was a dumb move by a young kid who doesn't have a lot of MLB experience. Certainly cost the Yankees a game but the rule clearly states what it states. Umps were right in tossing him.

I think MLB is afraid that if they give pitchers an inch, they'll take a mile. IMHO, it would make sense to make pine tar legal at the umpire's discretion if it is cold out, like how pitchers can be allowed to blow on their hands under certain circumstances.

I agree and I'm sure that's the fear. I think you are right on with that observation but its silly to a certain extent. I think, just as you say, it can be managed by the Officials. To me, the larger danger is a guy throwing a 95-100 MPH fastball with no control. It is what it is.

Umps were right to toss him and hopefully, it's a valuable lesson learned.

The guys on baseball tonight were all saying it's totally fine to use it and that everyone does it but were all offended and annoyed that he made it so blatantly obvious. I don't get it. If everyone knows it's so common and accepted, why is there a rule against it and why isn't it enforced more often? They're technically cheating but just hiding it. So it's fine to cheat as long as they don't see it?

Either enforce the rule or get rid of it. He got caught in the first game vs Boston, he didn't get into trouble for it because he took it off when he was told it was obvious. Then he goes out and does it again and it's even more obvious lol. He deserves the ejection for that alone, maybe he was just taking advantage of one of the unwritten rules in baseball.

Also, an update. He was suspended for ten games. Two more than Peralta got a couple years ago...probably because he did it twice.

This I don't agree with. Unless you are going to suspend everybody who is using Pin Tar, this to me is not right.

Yup, it doesn't make sense. The only reason he's getting suspended is for it being obvious.

It's downright comical.

Someone(s) teammates, clubhouse guys, coaches... had to have seen that blotch on his neck. How could you miss it? And yet they let him go out there.

And then it was plain as day on TV... And someone from the Yankee organization had to see it, but no one did anything about it.

Girardi looks like an *** over his response after the first even and not being more upfront about it last night.

It certainly adds another chapter to a great rivalry.

I am a Yankee fan and I agree with 2 starts suspension.

It wasnt dumb. Its still unexplainable as to why he did it that way. A 10 year old kid would hide it better.

I am more concerned about if he can actually pitch and be successful. Period.

If he cant. I want him gone. Send him to mets or Seattle or Boston.

Yeah it seems like he might need to pitch well, maybe he can't get his control right without it? That would be unfortunate but we will find out soon.
