Pixar's most and least successful movies at the box office, ranked

With the release of its 17th film, "Finding Dory," on June 17, Pixar will likely continue the box-office domination that began with the release of its first film, "Toy Story," in 1995.

Though each Pixar film released has made the studio a substantial net profit, not every movie has lived up to the immense success of some of the company's true blockbuster hits.

Using Box Office Mojo's and The Numbers' sales and production statistics for each film, Business Insider has ranked all 16 Pixar movies so far by their inflation-adjusted net profit, to keep things on an even playing field (so, subtracting budget from box-office gross) to determine which film was the most financially successful of its time. (The formula doesn't take into account marketing and other costs, however, so net profits are actually likely smaller.)

Accordingly, we adjusted all global box-office receipts and budgets for inflation through 2016 using the US inflation calculator.

Read on to see which Pixar film came out on top, and which landed at the bottom of the heap:

1. Finding Nemo
2. Toy Story 3
3. Inside Out
4. The Incredibles
5. Up
6. Monsters Inc.
7. Monsters University
8. Toy Story 2
9. Ratatouille
10. Toy Story
11. Cars
12. Cars 2
13. Wall-E
14. Brave
15. A Bug's Life
16. The Good Dinosaur

The Incredibles hit theaters nine years after Toy Story. It's been nearly twelve years since it came out. Even so, it's remains my all-time favorite Pixar movie. I'm not surprised it's still in the top five (albeit adjusted) net profit for the studio.

On an unrelated note, I must admit being surprised not seeing Frozen on the list. l'm constantly re-reminding myself that Pixar and Walt Disney Animated Studios are separate movie houses under the Disney umbrella. Of course, I keep forgeting Dreamworks Animation Studios created Monsters vs. Aliens too. So not only did that movie not belong on the list but it was made completely outside of Disney's control. Now where are my memory pills? :p

Kind of thought Planes (at least the first one) would be in there as well.

Oh and I think Toy Story might be the first time when I thought the Third movie was the best one of the bunch.

I dunno about box office success, but as far as how good they are, as far as I'm concerned it's a little like the following, with almost everything below Toy Story being pretty close to interchangeable, except the last few, especially Cars 2 which is an unbearable mess of a movie.

The Incredibles
Toy Story 2
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story
Ratatouille
A Bug's Life
Inside Out
Wall-E
The Good Dinosaur
Cars
Up
Finding Nemo
Toy Story 3
Monster's University
Brave
Cars 2

Planes was purely Disney I believe and not Disney/Pixar

Wall-E is way up there on my list. Kinda scary how close to reality that one is (or could be).

It's a shame the Good Dinosaur didn't get more recognition. It's easily better than at least half of the movies on this list.

You should be ecstatic to see this then.
