I see no free agent DE's that would be a true difference-maker and whom we can afford (JPP would be the only one, but NY will not let him go and we won't pay what it will take)... and we all know that a rookie DE (picked at 28 or 60) is not going to do it in his first year and maybe not even in his second (that's assuming we get the right one)... so, I feel like the best strategy is to create pass rush from the interior. First step is to cut Tyronne Crawford. Will save $7.25 million in salary. Second step is to trade 4th/conditional 3rd for Sheldon Richardson and use that $7.25 million toward re-signing him to a long term deal (he is signed at $8 million in salary for 2017). He is a true difference maker on the inside. He has been stuck in a 3-4 scheme that does not play to his strengths of get-off and quickness. I think he can be a disruptive DT in our 4-3. Third step is to coach Jaylon Smith up on blitzing in conjunction with stunts by Malik Collins and Richardson. This inside pass rush would be difficult for any OL to handle. And the pressure in a QB's face is often more effective than from around the edge (especially for guys like A Rodgers and Eli). Our four existing DE's -- D Law, Mayowa, D Irving, Tapper -- and a rookie DE will have 1-on-1 matchups with OL's focusing on those three beasts on the inside. I think they can get some sacks by default.
