Play action and deep passes

No true deep threat. I believe you need at least two threats in the passing game to have that play action option, even with a good running back like Zeke. JMO

In another thread, I think it is Percy who posted a stat that Dallas was last in the league in pass attempts at least 20 yards down field.

In other words, we didn't even try to go deep, even on play action. Like the OP said, that is just stupid considering this oline and our RBs.

Play action to someone like Zeke and some deep pass attempts seem like a winning format to me.

It would drive me insane when Dallas would suck up the safeties and play action only to throw a 5-7 yard pass

Total waste of time

As much as teams sell out to stop the run this team is idiotic for not throwing the halfback pass at least once or twice per game to keep teams honest. That's piss poor coaching. Tomlinson used to throw a TD or two fairly frequently.

Defenses no longer fear the passing game. Why respect the play action? They're just playing against the run in the first place. Make Dak beat you.

He had 6 games with no touchdown passes and another 2 with only 1. In 15 games he threw for less than 300 yards and in 8 games threw for less than 200 yards.

Boy that's ugly, in this day and age 8 games under 200 yards is unacceptable.

To compare to Romo who in 13 games in his career with at least 1 passing attempt threw no TDs (2 of those games with less than 20 attempts).

He had 21 games where he threw for less than 200 yards. 6 of them with 21 or fewer attempts.

Dak had 8 in a single season...

He is the ultimate bus driver.

I think I saw Dallas do this twice last season! Too much risk for Garrett!

I don't have the numbers so I may be wrong but it seemed like we did play action more in 2016 than 2017.
To me this is a better formation when you have the best RB and a QB who can run/roll out.

What I DON'T think works is the stupid shotgun with and empty backfield. Horrible.

There is a joke on Alex Smith that his wife is always unhappy because he wouldnt go deep. Will that be the case with Dak too?

The Thing is the Cowboys #1 and #2 Receivers are Bad Route Runners and Slow (Dez) or Bodycatchers (T-Will).

Not in our playbook - sorry.

What receivers are deep threats? Terrance Williams is a body catcher.. so he isn't going to go up and catch the ball. Beasley is tiny, count him out, Dez is too slow and drops everything these days, Witten shouldn't even be playing anymore. Hell, our best deep ball threat in my mind right now is Brice Butler and he didn't get much playing time because he wasn't being paid the big bucks.

Sammy Watkins or John Brown could be just what we need. Im leary of the injuries but these guys can get loose deep and have the speed and hands and tracking ability to run and get bombs

Probably because Dak can’t get through his progressions quickly with his eyes downfield. Having his back to the play and then having to turn and get through progressions may not be doable for him.

Before everything fell apart for the offense in week 10, Dallas led the NFL in points per drive and in percentage of drives that resulted in a TD. We were 2nd in plays per drive, and tied for 3rd in TOP per drive. In other words, the conservative ball-control approach was working. The last thing they wanted to do was waste downs and set up unfavorable down-and-distance situations. They probably decided the reward of scoring quickly and putting their own defense back on the field wasn't worth that risk, when they were going to score at the end of the drive anyway.

I'm sure it was comfortable for the coaches while it lasted.
