Players half a shelf life of an average of 3 years. Your career can end on any play.
If you are lucky enough to make it to your second contract and the team you are with does not feel you are a core guy worth a competitive contract, I would hope you would explore your options. You have a family to feed and 50 years to live and most of these guys aren't prepared to get a real job.
Only the real stars get national endorsements...most of these teams are in huge cities. Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, DC...these are all cities full of endorsement opportunities. I presently reside in South Jersey, when Murray signed with the Eagles...he was plastered in every grocery store near me. Endorsement money is everywhere.
