I see a lot of complaining about that and indictment of the players for doing it. Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I thought that was the call from the DC or Defensive Captain, not the CB. Isn't he just doing what the call is?

Don't get me wrong - I'm tired of the cushion. But I would prefer that if the DC is calling it that he just stop. He isn't doing them favors.

The thought is that you keep the play in front of you, never give up big plays, and give your corners a chance to make plays. I am anxious to see Newman in that role.

I understand the thought, but the obvious defense against it is to run a quick out that the CB can't react to. That is mostly what I saw Reeves get beat on - I don't care who the CB is, that cushion just makes that route too easy in a timing offense.

Also, while I think our pass rush is improved, until it is completely distructive that philosophy will be something QBs like.

We need to sell out and get some great corners this off-season. If we're going to run this blitzing style offense, we need guys that can hold the WRs for a couple of seconds at least.

We're going to give up ALOT of passing yards until the rest of our team catches up to Bradie James and Jay Ratliff in the pass rushing department.

Shocking, huh?

Newman won't be doing that. That scheme is typically used to cover for weaker or slower corners. Newman is a stud.

I think Ware is doing pretty well, considering he is the focus of teams on nearly every play.

But no, I get where you are coming from, I just think we can do better with these coverage schemes. I'll be honest - it's the one thing I miss about last year.

Obviously the counter is to throw the quick slants or out routes or the like. What you're betting on is that the QB won't be quick enough or accurate enough to beat your blitz consistently for the entire game. They're going to beat it some. Even quite a bit at times. But they have to beat it consistently for the entire game to put up a lot of points. The gamble worked against Trent Green but didn't against Eli Manning.

With Newman in, we'll obviously play things differently.

My problem is that it seems that virtually every important pass play against us is when we are in that soft coverage. When we play tighter, the Corners seem to do better. I feel like we are being too cautious and hanging to DBs out to dry.

Just so we dont make Rex Grossman look all-pro next week prime time.....

Heck, i think get em' up there tight-----Wade should tell the Media that the corners are gonna press at the line, and it completly up to the front 7 to get to the QB......put the monkey on their backs-----pressure on baby:eek:

ok, maybe not......but ya' figure Wade would mix it up some, not be so predictable, must be concentrating yet on offense..

I agree. I think we tightened up some in the 2nd half. I think once we (read: Wade Phillips) feel more comfortable we will tighten up some.

Fortunately, the short, quick, underneath passes aren't Rex Grossman's forte.

Expect Phillips and Co. to be licking their chops after what I saw from Grossman...:laugh2:

I hope so. I think that tightening it up should help two ways - one, the corners aren't being hung out to dry on a quick hitch, and it makes 3 step drops harder.

Press the WR I say - the pass rush can always use the extra second.

.. is a result of trying to role coverage to Reeves and also trying to not let RW get caught in single coverage as much as possible.

At least one of those things has to improve to probably stop playing it.

I would still stop. Reeves is just better in man coverage when he is up on the WR.
