Playing the officials

It's almost a foregone conclusions that at least few regular season games are going to be played with the replacements officiating them. A smart team is going to take advantage of that fact.

From what I've seen so far in the preseason, the officials have placed a heavy emphasis on the safety penalties. I've seen more chop blocks called so far than in most entire regular seasons. Several have been when the defender isn't even engaged.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the head on defense, nor have a RB go low. Both are just asking for a bad call.

It also seems they throw the flag on the flop rather than seeing the hold. I hate to say it but maybe Dallas' rushers should take a class with soccer or basketball players.

On the flip side, some things just aren't being called. I'm not sure any of the replacements understand what a pick play is. Rewatch last nights Tennessee/Nate Washington TD. The pick put on the defender who was supposed to be covering him might have been the best hit of the night.

My concern is that these replacements are going to make a major mistake on a call that is going to cost Dallas a win. Can you imagine the uproar on this site if that should occur and especially if that lost game coast Dallas a playoff birth? All those that have been posting here recently that these refs can be no worse than the regulars will be crying like babies. Probably loader than the rest...

I'm actually petrified of these referees. I really am. I've watch a lot of preseason football and it's just been bad.

honestly I am not that worried. I would rather have guys who are trying their best then guys that have biases and want to see themselves on TV.

Good teams can TYPICALLY overcome poor refs.

There's been major mistakes that have cost Dallas in the past. Every NFL team can say that except Pittsburgh and New England.

But this really isn't about that. I've noticed some tendencies and therefore hope that Dallas is preparing.

They blew a call on a pick play with the Cowboys last year against the Giants. It was a bogus call and could have very well cost them the game.

I don't have the time nor the desire to do the research...but I'm sure there have been hundreds of games blown by bad calls. I don't understand why all of a sudden people thought that the refs were so irreplaceable. After every game we have threads about this and that was a bad call, so at least the zone won't be any different.

It can't possibly be any worse than botching a heads/tails call on Thanksgiving. Give these new guys a chance. In a month we won't know the difference.

Can you imagine the excuses and whining we'll hear from 16 fan bases after their week one loss?

How do you know the replacements don't have biases? It's pretty ridiculous to assume that the regular guys are the only ones with bias, or that they aren't trying their best. The replacements are just as likely to be biased or want tv face time as the regular refs.

No one overcomes poor officiating if it is crucial moments in games.

Especially when 20 of the teams in the league are only a player or two in quality different from each other.

At least there is hope that these guys will get better.

I like the direction the NFL is trying to go with full time refs, and back up crews ready to replace guys who are under-performing.

I most definately hope the staff is noting the replacement officials' tendancies and making adustments accordingly. I have noted in the limited preseason games I have watched that the replacement officials have allowed more contact from corners.

There are some pass rushers who are good at timing the snap so that they can begin their rush almost the exact time that the ball is snapped, but in my opinion such a tactic is better off left unused.

It depends on an official's eyes being good enough to tell that the pass rusher wasn't offsides, and that's hardly something that can be depended on.
