3rd down and 7 at the 8 yard line and Dallas throws a ball to Witten for 6 1/2 yards.
I think this was not playing to win. I am fine with settling for a FG. If that is what they wanted to do, then just run Barber and set the FG attempt up in the middle of the field. If they really wanted to win, which I truly prefer, then run a real play that is intended to win the game.
I like Witten and think he is a very good tight end. I don't like him around the goal line. He is not a scorer. He is much better in the middle of the field. He is not that good around the goal line. I also don't like Fasano. He is a rookie and there should not be much expected from him and that is my point. He should not even be in the game. He has made one memorable play all season long, but mostly has just screwed up pick plays. One of the most critical plays of the season and Fasano is in there running a pick for Jason and Witten who has scored 1 TD is a main option. There has to be a better play than that. You have to take the chance into the end zone to play to win and then if it doesn't work, settle for the FG.
Sure in the end, it was the botched hold on the FGA that cost Dallas the game. They still had their chance, but I think it is the fundamental approach of the offense that says something about this team. Do they really play to win? I don't see it.
Another thing that shows this to me is the pace of the offense. They are constantly letting the play clock get down to 1 before snapping the ball. They take their time getting set. A play to win mentality is faster paced. It doesn't have to be 15 seconds on the play clock, but it shouldn't be 1 or 2 seconds each and every snap.
