Let me first explain I am aware of the abundance of Jaylon Smith nerve firing/not firing threads. I am only posting this because its approaching his injury from a different angle. I have wondered myself and seen many here ask about his potential for playing with the brace.

Ex-Eagle's injury story could bring Cowboys' Jaylon Smith fear and hope

Despite the overwhelmingly positive nature displayed by Jaylon Smith on his knee’s nerve regeneration, a different reality may be setting in for the Dallas Cowboys.

Rapoport has firmly gone on record as saying there has been no regeneration of the nerve damaged when Smith tore his ACL and MCL in January 2015. This runs counter to other reports, specifically by Todd Archer of ESPN, who has been told there has been some regeneration, but it’s not complete.

Wherever the truth lies, Smith will compensate on the field while wearing a corrective brace. He may never be the same player again, lacking the explosiveness that had him labeled as a generational player coming out of Notre Dame. Luckily for Smith, he has someone to look back at to know playing with the brace can be successful.

Regardless of the state of the nerve, I think he could rush the passer with the brace. I'm not so sure he can cover TEs in this league while not being able to move the foot.

A few clarifications are necessary on this particular post of an ad nauseum debate.

If the case in point had peroneal palsy, he did not finally move his foot downward under his own power; that supremely important function would be intact, and it would have been an upward or dorsiflexion movement that eventually returned.

In addition, the severity of his injury may have been significantly worse, considering the poor prognosis given by the medical team. His rehab would have been much longer and more frustrating as miniscule improvement was experienced over an extended time.

Subsequently, a component of hopelessness and depression enters the mind of even an athlete when burdened with these circumstances.
That's a killer for confidence when facing the long odds of recovery and necessary commitment.
JS doesn't have that problem; he's progressing according to schedule, and the incremental improvements have kept his spirit high.

Finally, it's noteworthy that gradual improvement was continuing in this severe nerve injury over a period of at least 3 years.
This illustrates the protracted nature of nerve recovery and again shows that this process is not an all-or-nothing issue (the firing vs not firing debate).

So, for those who perpetually feel the need to live in angst about the future of JS, we have no reason to believe that he will not be a definitive force in the NFL. He'll need to learn the system and how to recognize offensive reads like any other rookie this year, but he should be a starter and get better as the year unfolds. He will not be at any increased risk of injury, as the knee is solid.

He was drafted to be a difference maker, and my opinion is we will surely see that by 2018.

Great post. It is still over 6 months before the first game and 10 months until the playoffs. That's a significant amount of time for him to heal and get closer to 100 percent. I just hope we don't rush him and set him back a year or more or injure him permanently. We need to be cautious with him.

An article today says not only has the nerve regenerated but it has begun firing as well. It also says he has begun to get foot activation. Couple this with Jerry recently saying the nerves are responding and I think Rapaports article is way over exaggerated. Saying there has been no regeneration at all seems to be at odds with everything that has been reported for the last several months.

Thanks, I think if anything my take from the article is that a lesser talanted player with a similar (if not worse by your accounts) injury was able to come back and play football.

Jaylon has been described often as being in uncharted water, and thats not entirely true. I have always been optimistic about him and I expect (hope) he will have a full return, but the knowledge that he can play either way is at least somewhat comforting to me.

Jaylon will be fine healthwise. He's improving week to week and if the video's that have been made public tell us anything, it's that he's a high motor guy that has come a long way to overcome is injuries. OTAs and training camp will be fun to see his progress. I think he'll be a great addition to the LB corps.
