Tale of the Tape – The Prototype
Height: 6’2"

Weight: 295 lbs

40-yd Dash: 4.95 sec

Arm Length: 32"

Characteristics: Quickness, Power, Hand usage, Leverage

Importance of 3-Techniques

The 3-technique has become one of the most important positions over the past two decades. The ability to get pressure from the font four has become increasingly crucial in this pass happy league. Defensive tackles are required to do more than stuff holes as offenses attempt to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands faster. Tony Romo is known for his quick decision making and release, averaging 2.76 seconds to throw (Tom Brady averaged 2.49). When Tony was sacked the average time it took to get to him was 3.11 seconds (for Brady - 3.26). Having defensive tackles than can cause havoc up the middle is as important as an edge rusher screaming from the outside.

I really think Collins could be the 3T of the future.

Dude is quick initial step and can use his hands well (former state champ wrestler).

Give him help at the 1T. Legitimate help.

McClain played well, but he just isn't the answer.

Stop neglecting the position and get a space eating monster that can push the pocket.

4.9 40 is not the prototypical Marinelli 3Tech, he prefers explosion off the LOS which is not really identified in the 40.

Describes Aaron Donald.

Not sure what the Rams do with him with their change to a 3-4. He's a special player so they are going to try to make him work, but something the team might want to pay attention to.

Agreed.

It's possible that the only chance for FA splash is Poe; looks like Berry will be tagged, and he'll be allowed to walk.
He could be a dominator, and elevate the play of everyone else.

If we are all done with Crawford as a 3T (which we should be), who will be the back up 3T to Collins and get some play time each game?

I really do think if we can get a 1 tech, our entire pass rush would improve more than if we got an edge rusher. Just my opinion.
A traditional 1 Tech most likely will come off the field in pass rushing situations and replaced by a situational rusher like Irving or Jack Crawford

Crawford suffers from playing alongside the worst set of defensive ends in the NFL who actually play in the game.

maybe but he doesnt do well with double teams,he needs a good 1 tech next to him who demands double teams consistently to be effective and that aint happening with Marinelli.I just wish he would retire and we would run a mire traditional 4-3 and it will also help with the draft because right now we are dismissing quite a lot of players because of his "scheme".

I'm kind of on board with you. I think his slash and go scheme is dated.

I want to see the kinds of guys we go after now that it's clear the defense needs to be addressed and the offense is in a really good place.

I wonder how much input Marinelli has actually had in the past on getting "his guys".
