Playoff picture taking shape
Wire reports
Jacksonville clinched its first playoff berth since 1999 on Saturday, rallying for three touchdowns in the final quarter to beat Houston 38-20 for an AFC wild-card spot. (Related item: Playoff scenarios explained)
Seattle (13-2) also clinched home field in the NFC after a 28-13 win over Indianapolis, which already has clinched the top seed in the AFC.
The win by the Jaguars (11-4) left only one wild-card spot in the AFC. Pittsburgh (10-5) beat Cleveland 41-0 and will clinch that spot if it beats Detroit at home next week.
Denver, meanwhile, won the AFC West before its game against Oakland when Kansas City beat San Diego 20-7. The Broncos then beat the Raiders 22-3 and assured themselves of a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in the AFC.
The Chiefs (9-6) remain alive for a wild-card spot, but the loss eliminated the Chargers (9-6), who handed Indianapolis its first loss last week.
In the NFC, Washington beat the New York Giants 35-20 to stay alive for the NFC East title, while Dallas beat Carolina and Tampa Bay beat Atlanta in the final seconds of overtime to set up a wild final weekend.
The victory by the Commanders (9-6) means Washington can make the playoffs as a wild card if it wins its finale in Philadelphia next week. It can win the NFC East if it wins and the Giants (10-5) lose at Oakland.
Tampa Bay's 27-24 win over Atlanta (8-7) put the Bucs into a tie for the NFC South lead with Carolina at 10-5. Dallas (9-6) remained alive with a bizarre 24-20 win over the Panthers in Charlotte.
The Bucs can win the NFC South with a victory at home over New Orleans next week.
The Falcons are eliminated.
Team spokesman Reggie Roberts said after the game that the Falcons were still mathematically alive, but almost surely eliminated. NFC Information Manager Michael Signora later confirmed that Atlanta had been eliminated.
