Playoff Structure is Dated

As a Seattle fan I feel the exact way about my team. Not playoff worthy.
If we would have made it, we would have got the participation ribbon and been one and done!

This isn’t really about the Cowboys. Obviously the Cowboys could’ve potentially benefitted. This is more about the fact that the Bills are in the playoffs, the Jags benefitted from a weak division, the Titans stink and the Chiefs were a very weak team after a hot start.

The AFC Conference game is already set just like last season.
Jacksonville demolished Pittsburgh in the regular season. I understand it's the playoffs but Jacksonville is built for it and Steelers aren't impressive at all.

........Pat's for sure is moving on and could play the backups after half time. Only thing that could stop them is the Brady, Belichek and Kraft deal

I want 2 changes.....

1. Only the best team in each conference deserves a bye.

2. Because of reason 1, add a 7th team to each confetence, giving us 6 games during wild card weekend. 3 winners advance to divisional round, with lowest remaining seed playing top seed. Divisional round is 4 games, champ round is 2 games, and then the SB.

Also, a rule change I thought of today....if you use and win all 3 challenges, you get awarded a 4th timeout.

NBA is a better product because they understand it's a players league. Imagine an up and coming star like Giannis or Porzingis being railroaded by an "investigation" lead by their league office, you'd never see it. As far as the NFL goes I don't see anything wrong with the current playoff format.

I wouldn’t have picked the Cowboys to beat any of the playoff teams this year . We only beat one in regular season not counting finale . Sounds like sour grapes to me.

There have been some instances where better teams in a conference were left out but it’s set up to win your division and the scheduled is based around playing your divisional opponents and conference foes.

There is an argument to be made one conference is occasionally stronger . So put Dallas, Detroit and Seattle in AFC playoffs . Who’s going to Pittsburgh or Foxboro and win one?

You make a good point my friend, the 2017 version of Dallas, Detroit, or Seattle would get their teeth kicked in by either Pitt or the Pats.

All three teams had multiple opportunities to win enough games to make the playoffs and didn't, for a variety of reasons. Doesn't matter what the reasons were, they are all excuses at this point, either you win enough games to make the playoffs or you don't.

And if you don't, then don't start crying about the format................I know some fans might get pissed at me saying this, but Dallas really didn't deserve to make the playoffs this year. We had just one single win against a team that finished the season above 500 and that was the Chiefs.

It's fine the way it is..
The 9-7 Ravens, and Chargers are no better or worse than the Cowboys,Seahawks or Lions..albeit I'd favor the Ravens and Chargers over both.
No extra teams should be added to the playoffs... 12 out of 32 is small and select. If a team is s good as advertised they should have no problem beating a "weak" wild card team.. just like in boxing..styles make match ups.

Most playoff teams have double digit wins anyway. Not sure much would change. Besides that, I'll pass on the inevitable conspiracy theories that would follow.

Another season with a tough schedule? How exactly is that, "random"?

Well, sometimes random sucks.

I like the divisions the way they are, it is the most fairest way to determine which team is actually the best.

What is funny is when people say that Philly is only the number one seed because of a weak schedule. They apparently don't realize that all division teams play 14 games against the same opponent, only 2 games are different.

So with 14 games being identical, Philly is the number one seed and we are sitting home on the couch, yet Philly is a product of the schedule?

Steelers are a very good team, especially at home. They will demolish the Jags this week.

The Chiefs final 4 games of the regular season:

4-0
27-15 W over Oakland
30-13 W over LA Chargers
29-13 W over Miami
27-24 W over Denver (resting some key starters)

Average score:

28.25 - 16.25 (avg margin of victory: 12)

3 poor teams. The Chiefs probably deserved the playoffs but they were very unimpressive after a hot start.

Remember, they started the season 5-0. So their final 11 games, they were 5-6 and you listed 4 of their wins so there was a stretch of games where they were 1-6.

As I said, very weak after a hot start.

I will like to have the NFL go back to the 3 divisions and a high wild card getting home field in the 1st round. Problem was that there was an odd number of teams in one of the divisions (I think it was the AFC central with Bal, Cle,Cin, Pitts, Tenn, and Jags, not sure there were any more divisions with 6 teams).

To me, this would reward the "tough" divisions and there won't be any 5th or 6th seed having a better record than 3rd or 4th seed.

Jerry needs to build a team whose players and coaches can get to the playoff and be a consistent playoff team with the current playoff format. Don't change it just because Jerry can't get the job done as it is. It would be like letting Jerry off of the hook, instead of holding him accountable for our playoff failures

what jerry needs to do is hire a real football gm and he needs to get out of the way and let him build a consistent winner and hire the proper coaches jerry needs to sit in the owners box and stay out of the WAY

His ego is too big to do that. It's the same reason why he is sticking with Garrett as a head coach. He doesn't want to give up control or admit that he is wrong. And I believe that his meddling is what would prevent certain coaches from coming here.

That is how we get teams with losing records in the playoffs.

There have been 4 teams with losing records to make the playoffs in NFL history and two of them came in the 1982 strike season.

1982: Browns and Lions (both 4-5)
2010: Seahawks (7-9)
2015: Panthers (7-8-1)

So when exactly did this become a wide-spread issue that the league must address?

You could easily make the change to a top 12 field with 4 automatic byes. Then the remaining teams are slotted based on their record. 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, etc. The issue would be tie breakers and how you manage that with not all teams playing primarily in the same conference. i mostly like the way it is now. But at the same time, in 2010 a 7-9 team made the playoffs and 2 10-6 teams did not because of the current format and in total 6 teams had a better record that didn't make the playoffs. . That just isn't right.

If it was up to me, only division winners would advance.

Eight is enough.
