Playoffs Seeding...How does it work?

O.k. fellas we pretty much know that the Cowboys and Packers will be seeded 1 and 2 for the playoffs. The leaves the other divisional winners Seattle and Tampa Bay @ 3 and 4, respectively. Now assuming the 9-4 finish with the number 5 seed and the Vikings take the last spot at number 6, then how does the playoff seeding work then.

Do the 3 and 6 seed play each other/ and the 4 and 5 play each other? If so then which winner do the Cowboys play? Do they reseed the playoffs so the Cowboys play the worst record or do they just play the winner of the say 3 and 6 seed and go from there?

Please help because I have some money riding on the correct answer.

They re-seed. Lowest ranked always plays highest ranked.

As the one seed, you cannot play anyone higher than a fourth seed in the second round.

So assuming things hold the rest of the way, we would play either Tampa, Giants or Vikings. We cannot play Seattle unless we fall to 2nd seed.

Seattle has the equivalent of a 2 game lead on Tampa as they have the tie breaker on them.

Obviously, of those teams, I would prefer to play Tampa. Yeah I know Gaycia punked us last year but he won't do it in the playoffs this year.

It's nice to see these questions on CZ. It's been so long that Dallas was assured of not only a home game in the playoffs but also (after the next few weeks) a home game IN THE DIVISIONAL ROUND, people have forgotten what the format is.

- The higher number seed of the two teams playing is the home team. Therefore, the #1 seed always plays at home (home field advantage).

- The higher seed playing always plays the lowest seed available. For example if the vikings are the number 6 seed, and cowboys are #1 seed. And vikings make it to the divisional playoffs, they do not play the #2 packers. The #1 seed has the benefit of playing the "worst" seeded team.

You said it better than me. In fact I think the way I said it sounds wrong even though I truly know how it works. Like you said.
