I’m sure everyone guessed Jason Garrett right? Yep, since 1996, the last year Barry Switzer won a playoff game in Dallas, Jason Garrett has the most playoff wins here as a head coach with TWO!

Here’s a little perspective: The Dallas Cowboys all time playoff record is 36-31, which even after our playoff win drought of the last three decades, we remain 5th in NFL playoff wins behind the niners, packers, patriots and steelers.

Tom Landry was 20-16 in the playoffs in his 29 years as Cowboys HC. In the 35 years of the Jerry Jones era, the Cowboys playoff record is 16-15. Jimmy and Barry Switzer won 12 of those playoff wins in the Jerry era in the first 7 years of Jerry’s ownership. Let that marinate.

In the 35 years Jerry Jones has owned the Dallas Cowboys he has hired 8 head coaches. I would argue only three of them - Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells and maybe Mike McCarthy would ever be considered in the top echelon of NFL head coaching talent. In fact of those 3, only Jimmy won more than one playoff game here in Dallas.

Cowboys head coaches just don’t win many playoff games here since 1996. Our playoff record with the six head coaches who followed Barry Switzer is 4-10.

Jimmy was 9-4 in the playoffs as a HC, was 7-1 in the playoffs here, 2-3 in Miami. Parcells was 11-8 in the playoffs, but was 0-2 in Dallas. McCarthy is 11-11 in the playoffs, but he’s 1-3 here. I realize Barry Switzer had a 5-2 playoff record here but by the time he was HC here, he was at the end of his career and no other NFL team would have hired him.

So when we as Cowboys fans consider who Jerry Jones hires as his next HC, we must somehow pray that coach is better than Jason Garrett who of all the HCs Jerry has hired since 1996, Garrett has the most playoff wins here with a whopping TWO.

This seems like a moot, depressing stat

That's like me starting a discussion on "Which states have the most Z's in their spelling"

1st place, Arizona, with ONE z.

And, uhhhh, there is no 2nd place.

Or....

Since 2023, which Mazi Smith sacks were your favorite, ranked from best to worst.

Answer: well, the 1 career sack he has is my favorite one. Which is yall's favorite?

If you have noticed this since Jimmy Johnson AND the start of free agency, it highlights the same issues we are still talking about today ....their refusal to take free agency seriously. In other words, good drafts and few role players can get you a winning season but you still need 1-3 difference makers from free agency to have a real chance in the postseason.

Yep. Contrary to Jerry's opinion,
coaching matters.
McCarthy was another dinosaur hiring mistake whose 15 yr old SB win kept fans interest.
Until he lost his coordinators who did all the heavy lifting for him.

Now we're back to square one and this time Jerry doesn't need a stadium built to hire a Parcells type.
Hoodie ain't the answer but his hiring would sell the most tickets. And that coach to owner relationship would be daily news in itself.

All others just need not apply without knowing Jerry's unique infrastructure, er chain of command. LOL

Gonna be fun to see who the next contestant is...
I'm leaning towards Moore.

He also had over twice the time than any head coach since 1996.

Jason Garrett 10 years
Parcells 4 years
Wade 4 years
McCarthy 4 years
Campo 3 years
Gailey 2 years
That's a fancy or wretched way of saying. I have aged 27 years and not a damn thing has changed, and here are the culprits.
Garret had 2 exciting seasons if I recall, and I was dumb enough to be fooled by them at the time.
But not wasting my time anymore, let's cut to the chase. Did a SB show up in any of the successful seasons by any of them?
Exactly.
MM is on borrowed time.
A rebuild or fine tune with the next coach will happen.
How many more years is that gonna add?
Im just gonna watch some cowboys football regardless of the quality or if we win / lose, as the promised land is a total unknown.

That's the root problem right there. Jerry and his coaches.
Since Jimmy left, Jerry only hires coaches he can control.

Everything comes from this, the helicopter, tours during practices, owner press conferences, diva players going straight to the owner.

A strong coach wouldn't allow any of it.

Garrett had a very top heavy roster, with weak depth. Perhaps only one season did he have a defensive roster capable of winning a championship. Dallas had a ton of dead money during much of his tenure- among the worst in the entire NFL for 3 straight seasons. Ignoring the QB position, I'm not sure Garrett ever had a roster as good as Dallas had last season.

How many coaches does Dallas have to go through before the realization is made that the problem lies elsewhere?

I mentioned Garrett had more success than the last few Cowboys HC’s, however he was given more years.

Perhaps it's just me, but when I hear the name Tom Landry, I have NEVER associated it with the Cowboys under Jerry Jones.

The BEST thing that ever happened to Jerry Jones was picking Jimmy Johnson as his first head coach.

Show you how old I am, am curious how accurate North Dallas 40 was of the team of that era. The irony is although two different styles and attitudes in head coaches, I can't help but think that Jimmy Johnson commanded as much respect as Tom Landry did on the field.

That said, when you're 19 and piloting a B-17 at the end of WW2, you're going to get respect when you get out.
