2K Sports, makers of the popular 2K video game lineup, has announced its return to the world of football video gaming after a three- year absence with All Pro Football 2K8. The video game will feature a host of former NFL legends, 240. Among those included are former Cowboy legends Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Daryl Johnston, Jay Novacek, Randy White, Ken Norton Jr, Too Tall Jones, Alvin Harper, Raghib Ismail, Leon Lett. Those are the players that I can confirm, but there may be more. For those who are unaware, 2K Sports has been absent from the football video gaming since 2006 when the NFL sold it's exclusive license to EA Sports.

They can't use current NFL players nor team names/logos or NFL logos at all because EA (Madden) has the exclusive rights to NFL/NFLPA, which means while this may be a great game its going to have serious trouble competing with Madden.

Its frustrating because Madden has changed very little over the last 5 years and they are still raking in the money because of the name and the exclusive contract with the NFL. Lack of competition means they don't have to try as hard which means the quality of their game has gone up very little recently, which means the consumer suffers.

IIRC, EA's deal with the NFL expires after the '09 season, meaning that in 2010 2k can at least try and negotiate a deal with the NFL. At least that's what they say on the 2k message boards.

BTW, I play 2K5 ALL THE TIME. It is such a great game. I expect the new one to be incredible, as well.

Well since EA Sports and Madden has exclusive rights to all players currently in the NFL right now, as well as all team names and uniforms, I am assuming the league will consist of generic teams and generic players to fill the voids. Of course, without an NFL license, 2K Sports had to come up with something innovative to sell its game. Anybody familiar with the direction the Madden series has gone knows that the games on the next gen systems has left a lot to be desired and has disappointed, but 2K Sports is known for its accurate representation of sport gaming. From what I have read, the game will be able to include things that the NFL would not normally allow, such as real time injuries (the position and impact of a violent hit or the way a player is tackled will generate injuries in real-time), player chatter and arguing, and late hits. The game won't be as over the top as "Blitz: The league with steroid pushers and all that, but according to the producers, will represent football as we see it on TV and in the stadiums. It promises to present new elements that Madden never has had in any of their titles. Sounds very intriguing.

I hope its good, but what would really make it nice is if they make the code friendly to modders, so that we can get real player/team names, logos etc. I agree that Madden leaves a lot to be desired and if these guys can nail it and they are friendly to the modding community it could work out for them.

I hated the 2k game, but I am frustrated with madden as well. THe line bites.
