Plug and Play and Consistency

Going forward in terms of what this years' draft gave us with our first pick was offensive consistency and the ability to plug and play going into the future.

We now have players at about 8/11 positions on offense that could easily make it to the pro bowl. The rest of the players on the offense are extremely solid players.

I would make two distinctions here. Upgrades during the Romo era and replacements post Romo.

For the next 2-5 years, I would say we can predominantly focus on improving the defense through the draft, something that is helped significantly if we're able to get Jaylon Smith on the field. There are a lot of IFs on our defense, but I actually don't think it will be that difficult to turn things around, especially if some of these players turn out. Defense could turn out to be pretty good this year, especially after we get our players back from suspension.

In the next few years we can probably get a WR to replace Williams, a RT to replace Free (if Green isn't already that guy). Ideally I would like to see us move away from the two tight end formation if it isn't going to be conducive to success for us. In this case I think we're pretty well positioned with Beasley at WR3.

After 2-5 years of investments in the defense with some peppering of the offense, we can focus on pluggin in a replacement QB and TE. I would say over the next 3 years, we should probably have 10 picks in the top 3 rounds going towards defense, and 5 on offense.

But that brings me to the next point. Consistency. This is something that I think is widely overlooked when it comes to this offense and when it comes to our first round draft pick.

When Elliott ran the ball 15 or more times, he ran for less than 100 yards a total of 1 times (91 yards on 18 carries).
When DeMarco Murray ran the ball 15 or more times in college, he ran for less than 100 yards a total of 18 times.

You give Elliott the rock and he always has success.

I could see him easily getting 1600 yards next year if he stays healthy and gets the carries. And with that, I think I've already spoken on how well the team does when we run the ball consistency. We win games, period, point blank.

DeMarco Murray had 4 losses in his career in Dallas when he ran for over 100 yards.

In 2014, I couldn't find a single running back who ran for 100 yards against Alabama and that include leonard Fournette who everyone thinks is head and shoulders better than Elliott...

He had 79 yards on 21 carries, pretty good against Alabama in 2014.

Elliott had 230 yards on 20 carries against the same defense.

Which means what?

Which means that you need to run to help run a balanced offense, reduce turnovers, move the chains, and eat clock.

By being able to run the football at the level of success you give Romo the ability to pick defenses apart.

Murray wasn't anywhere near as consistent in college as Elliott in college, and Murray's certainly left meat on the bone here. I can see Elliott having a much better career here than Murray even in his best years.

I think Fournettes physicality is what makes people overrate him. I don't see any agility with him though, just straight line, brute strength.

But what does either player's college production have to do with the 4 games that Dallas lost when Murray ran for 100 yards?

If 100 yards in a game is the prerequisite for consistency and all the benefits it provides then what do these losses have to do with anything? He hit 100 yards in these games. How do losses in games where he meets the criteria for consistency result in him being less consistent? He did his job so maybe it was something other than a consistent running game that resulted in a loss. Maybe a very poor defense nullifies any advantage there might be in having a player who can gain 100 yards on the ground.

My point is when we hit those benchmarks, we don't tend to lose.

Some excellent comparisons between Elliott and other backs. I really like the comparison on what backs have done against Alabama. I think this is a very good indication of just how special Elliott can be. The difference between 79 and 220 yards says it all to me. This makes me more confident we made an excellent pick and we're nicely set up at many positions to make a nice run.
