I went back and looked at the last few years to see how our offense and Rob Ryan defense stacks up:

2008

Points scored: 362 (22.6)
Points allowed:365 (22.8)

2009

Points scored: 361 (22.6)
Points allowed: 250 (15.6)

2010

Points scored: 394 (24.6)
Points allowed: 436 (27.2)

2011

Points scored: 348 (24.9)
Points allowed 296 (21.1)

If we do our avergages for the rest of season, Cowboys will score 400 points and allow just under 350.

So our offense is pretty good and our defense needs a lot of work.

Perfect place to mention this.... the only team to score a 1Q TD on us this year? The Eagles. And they did so twice in that game.

We CAN NOT let them get off to a fast start this week.

To do this right (if it's really supposed to be a measure of Rob Ryan) you will want to be sure you exclude the opponents' points that were not scored against our defense (punt block return, pick-sixes, etc.)

And then you'd also have to do that for the defenses in the other years too.

ThenI would have to take out defensive and special teams tds, etc. I am using what the NFL does in thier standings and rankings.

Ask and ye shall receive. Here are points scored and allowed, counting only offensive touchdowns + field goals. I'm excluding all return TDs and safeties. The numbers may be a tiny bit off because I'm not going hunting for missed extra points.

Year: Scored/Allowed (per game)
2011: 341/266 (24.4/19.0)
2010: 349/385 (21.8/24.1)
2009: 271/236 (19.4/16.9)
2008: 347/326 (21.7/20.4)

We had a lot of return TDs last year. And only one this year.

So this year's offense looks a lot better. The story on defense is basically the same. Our punt and kick returns are terrible this year. And we haven't been lucky on defensive returns - we've had at least as many takeaways, but we haven't been returning them for TDs. (Of course, this gives our offense more good opportunities to score, so it helps boost those numbers).

Hey thanks. Will you do my taxes, too! :)

Did you divide by 14 rather than 16 for the '09 per game numbers?

Sure, for a nominal fee. :)

Ack! You're right. Not only that, I got the scoring numbers wrong too. Let's try that again:

Year: Scored/Allowed (per game)
2011: 341/266 (24.4/19.0)
2010: 349/385 (21.8/24.1)
2009: 341/236 (21.3/14.8)
2008: 347/326 (21.7/20.4)
