PORTIS NOT LIKELY TO PLAY

Posted by Mike Florio on November 13, 2008, 10:04 p.m.

With an NFC East showdown only three days away, the injured knee of Commanders running back Clinton Portis apparently won’t sufficiently heal to allow him to play.

“I was hoping today that there would be a little more optimism, and there’s not,” coach Jim Zorn said, per the AP. “He’s still questionable. I would say there’s no change today. I was looking for another jump, but there wasn’t.”
Portis has a partially torn MCL, and the grade 2 sprain has a typical timetable of three-to-four weeks.

If Portis can’t go, Ladell Betts might be ready. He has missed three games with an MCL tear of his own, but he practiced again on Thursday.
“Betts looked good,” Zorn said. “He’s got a brace on, but made some cuts. That was encouraging.”

If neither can go, 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander would get the start against the 5-4 Cowboys.

Smack Alexander in the face on his first run, he'll be worthless the rest of the game. That guy is running on fumes. A healthy Betts is far more dangerous.

Exactly. Hit them old bones a few good times - make him pass block then it's over.

I would actually feel better if Portis was playing. Just another reason for this team to play down to it's compition.

Portis would not be worth much even if he did play- he is probably not even 80%. I would rather have someone playing who was not going to be able to hurt you then a healthier guy who might be able to make a big play.
