If Kyle Wilber moving to the right defensive end is permanent to the point that he is slotted there for week 1, that could easily mean taking two entirely different linebackers on the 53 man roster than most people have considered (Holloman likely being out for the season).

So if these changes become more tangible we could be looking at

Will - Durant - Smith
Mike - McClain - Hitchens
Sam - Carter - C.Lawrence

At defensive end it could look like this

RDE - Mincey- Wilber - (D.Lawrence)
LDE - Selvie - Crawford - (Spencer)

It'll be interesting to see if Spencer ends up playing on the right side, which I feel might be more apporpriate for him. It will also be interesting to see whether Crawford slides inside more once Spencer and Lawrence are back.

What I think we're currently looking at in terms of DT

3T
Melton
Coleman
(Okoye)

1T
(Josh Brent)
Terrell McClain
Nick Hayden

I think there might be one more spot for either Minter or Bishop. I think we're going to look a lot better on the defensive line than people are currently expecting, given that we're really running 2nd and 3rd team defensive lines as our 1st team line.

Normally you would have about 8 defensive linemen on the roster (we had 9 last year). The real question is what do you do with Spencer, Okoye, and potentially Brent.

Here is what I think the roster looks like without them

DE (5)
Selvie
Crawford
Mincey
Wilber
(Lawrence)

DT (4)
Melton
McClain
Coleman
Hayden

So you would have 9 total

Still some questionmarks about guys like Wilson and Minter though, it'll be interesting to see if they can beat people out. I think Minter has a much better chance than Wilson at this point despite the fact that Wilson is probably more accomplished with the team.

Wilson's best chance is to show the team that he can play RDE instead of Wilber, so they kick Wilber back up to linebacker.

I personally think someone like Wilson or a player with his same skillset will make the team strictly as a speed rusher. Also I know you put four in the position but i'd like to emphasize the fact there isnt alot of need to stack that position (Even though we have more talent at it than DE as it looks right now) because we have multiple players playing DE who can play DT as well (EX: Crawford, Mincey). Just wanted to point the position flex out to others. Great post! I agree with your assessment...... although i really hope you are wrong about hayden I really want him cut, he is not a good player. I understand the staff likes him though so it is what it is.

I can see keeping 10 DL to start, and 7 LB's, with Wilber be a swing type player. Until they get the DL / LB positions to see if the 9th & 10th spots can contribute or not.
But I hope it's not at thee expense of keeping a 4th RB or 6th WR either, if one or both of those are the better player, top 53 best players.

Where did you see Wilber is moving to DE? Didn't Jerry just praise him as a linebacker yesterday? I thought it was just sliding down on passing downs.

As the SLB, Wilber will be off the field in the Nickel defense. They plan to use him at DE in the Nickel. Garrett said he can do both.

They played in Nickel 61% of the snaps in 2013. That's plenty of snaps for him to play DE without having to be taken out as the SLB.

I don't think Carter can handle the strong side.

I proposed the idea a few days ago, but that was completely hypothetical. I haven't heard anything about Wilber being permanently moved to DE.

Not sure where I heard it, but I believe what was said was that if McClain starts at the Mike, that Durant would move to the Will, and if Carter beats out Wilber at the Sam, that Wilber would move to RDE.

That is exactly what was being reported yesterday. The situation among our front 7 is very fluid and that likely won't end in 2 weeks.

Oh, I believe that. They've been saying all along that the best three will play at LB. But the important point you just made was that Carter would actually have to beat our Wilber at the SAM.
