Quarterbacks - Tony Romo has become a Top 5 quarterback. The guy makes plays and has fun doing it. Now 4 years I was cursing out the Cowboys for wasting snaps on Romo and not giving Drew Henson more opportunities. Obviously, I'm an idiot. Brad Johnson seems serviceable but barely. If a quality QB gets cut, the Cowboys should pick up the phone. I don't think Bartel showed enough to make the team. He's a Practice Squad player at best. The Cowboys should seriously consider spending a 2009 mid-round pick on a QB to develop.
Runningbacks - Not only are we solid here but we should be for years. Even with the new contract, Barber plays like a hungry rookie. Felix Jones will be scary fast against defenses softened up by Barber. Choice is a future feature back. Deon Anderson should shut our revolving door at fullback for the next several years.
Receivers - Terrell Owens is the best in the game. Nuff said. I was desperate for a better #2 WR but if you consider that with TO, Witten, and Barber on the filed, our #2 WR is Romo's 4th option, Patrick Crayton works for me. The guy plays with passion and a chip on his shoulder after last year's big drop. Sam Hurd looks like a lock at #3. Miles Austin and Isaiah Stanback will start the season hurt but will also make the team. Mike Jefferson or Danny Amendola makes the Opening Day roster and will stay until Austin or Stanback return.
Tight Ends - Jason Witten didn't catch a single TD pass last year? I bet that changes this year. Tony Curtis is an underrated #2 at least until Martellus Bennett grows up. Bennett's "potential" means we can't afford two prospects so Rodney Hannah won't make the roster. Someone else will snatch him up.
O Line - The starting 5 form a top unit with 4 potential Pro Bowlers. I would now like to see the Cowboys re-sign Colombo so he can continue to play with Gurode, Davis, Adams, and Kosier.. Our depth scares me. McQuistan is the best of a bad bunch. Doug Free still may have a future. James Marten really needs to step up this year. Last two spots go to Berger and Procter since they know the system better than any of the newcomers.
Special Teams - Folk, McBriar, and LP are all solid. Folk needs to put more air under his kickoffs but the guy is money on field goals. You never hear about LP, which is a great compliment to a long snapper.
D Line - Marcus Spears, Jay Ratliff, Chris Canty, Tank Johnson, and Jason Hatcher are the 5 locks. Ratliff's versatility gives us a very solid 5-man rotation. The Cowboys need to find a way to sign Canty and Tank to extensions beofre they hit the open market. Remi Ayodele and Stephen Bowen seem to have been given the bulk of the pre-season snaps. I really wanted to see Junior Siavii and Marcus Dixon make the team but I haven't seen either on the field in the 3 pre-season games. Marcus Smith may earn the last d-line spot.
Linebackers - IMO, we have 7 linebackers that I feel can contribute for us. DeMarcus Ware is a beast. Bradie James is solid. Zach Thomas is all over the place and Greg Ellis can still get to opposing QB's. Anthony Spencer and Kevin Burnett will be missed the first few weeks. I'm still on the Bobby Carpenter bandwagon. He'll get his opportunities this year. Will the 8th spot go to Justin Rogers forhis special teams play or Erik Walden for his potential?
Secondary - If we use Roy correctly (running downs yes, passing downs no) he's still a playmaker. Although at that salary we need someone who does it all. He either improves his coverage skills or this is his last year in Dallas. Ken Hamlin, Terrence Newman, Anthony Henry, and Adam Jones give us a talented, veteran secondary. Mike Jenkins, Pat Watkins, and Orlando Scandrick give us depth for years. Courtney Brown may belong in that category too. We may regret letting Alan Ball go.
Have at it.
