Positional Snap Counts - Surprising

I'm learning some things I thought I knew about this team...are flat wrong. @VaqueroTD suggested I take the same basic data from another thread but parse it differently to answer a very different question. My other thread was about young pups and how much they're feeding. This thread looks at specific position groups and sees who the coaches respect most overall.

I'll post a series of positional snap count reports. Maybe you are surprised too?

1. I never would have guessed that both Williams and Fowler have received more reps than Dorance Armstrong.
2. Tank has played only more more snap this year than Sam Williams. I wouldn't have thunk it.

I frankly had written Gallimore off two months ago and never re-calibrated my expectation. He's playing much more than I would have imagined.

I'm thinking that Mazi and Hankins got most of their reps before the Cowboys built a lead and forced their opponents into a passing game.

This is of course misleading as Bell was really playing safety most (perhaps all?) of his reps.

Cowboys were serious about keeping Hooker and Kearse on the field vs. Jets. I don't think I yet fully understand how Thomas is getting deployed.

I'm thinking that Mazi and Hankins got most of their reps before the Cowboys built a lead and forced their opponents into a passing game.

That's logical.

Also...This is just a wild guess, but I wonder if after Wilson had a series with 4 qb runs...Cowboys decided to opt its quicker DTs.

Dorance Armstrong 40 snaps = 2 sacks, 3 tackles for a loss, 2 quarterback hits, 4 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle

The snap counts seem a little disproportionate, no?

Two games where we’ve had big leads and been able to play the backups extra might be skewing this data set. Although then again I’m hoping that’s how we get to play all season.

That's a good point. In addition, they may be giving lighter loads to guys they want to depend on late in the season which is why Williams is getting more snaps than Armstrong.

Although, I think this snap count chart says, if you are a star.......Get in there and stay in there!

Sure hope so. Because as plasticman insightfully noted...he's not delivering the goods at all so far.

I thought this might be a breakout year for Sam, perhaps a season he passed up Tank. Pity he's been a bit occupied with his defiant racing, crashing, and making a general mess of things.

Sam's game two participation dropped. If he doesn't clear his head and deliver... it will inevitably drop further. It's obvious the coaches expected more than he's delivered. There is quite possibly more to his story than we fans will see disclosed to the public.

I would be remiss to note that Osa has been the most utilized...and productive defensive tackle to this point. Cowboy coaches seem to see him as the biggest riser of the group.

Frankly, he might be our only plus player in the tackle room.

That's another good one, although I would caution where stats can't tell the story.

Regarding the discrepancies pointed out by some, there isn't enough data yet over the season to get a fair comparison.

We're looking at one game that was a complete arse whipping from the go with the starters already gone by the 4th.

Start to see the true patterns as the season goes on.

Fowler's snaps were more than cut in half from the Giants game, while Armstrong's went up a bit. Interesting.

This.
Valuable early season reps for our depth. Valuable rest for our starters/vets for a very long season with no preseason reps to get in game shape.
This is the time of year for nagging soft tissue injuries that get played through and then become problematic for the rest of the season. Our guys are getting eased in. A perfect script for managing the players for a full season over the first two games. McCarthy doesn't panic. He wants to have his players ready to play in January.
