Positions we could conceivably bypass during the draft.

This is an effort to show which positions we are potentially set at and could bypass allowing us to fill holes at those positions we have weaknesses at.

OL - this is a solid group and with the addition of Looney we are even set at the back up spots. I could be convinced to add a RT if the value was there but Free is a legit starter. Chaz Green might prove to be a good swing T, Leary might be the best backup G in the league and Looney gives us a back up C.

RB- again I could be convinced to draft a RB and would probably take one in this draft but if we bypass the position we should be ok there with the addition of Morris and hopefully Dunbar gets healthy.

TE - same as above. If the right guy is there take him but there is not a real need with the signing of Hannah and Witten still getting most of the snaps. Swain is also on the roster and hopefully Escobar gets healthy as well.

WR - once again I am looking to add one but just getting Dez back is going to be huge. Butler might prove to have something and if we skip the position this year, we could be alright for another year. Lucky might get a few looks this year as well. Williams is much improved when the focus is on Dez.

LB - I definitely would want to add a LB but if we didn't we could be ok as long as Mcclain stays away from the devils lettuce. It is time for Wilson to show something and Gachkar is decent depth and has a role and hopefully they figure out what to do with Wilber. Hitchens took a step back last year but is solid depth.

DT - I saw as a glaring need but the addition of Thornton and the possiblilty that Mcclain is finally healthy plus possible contributions by Whaley and the way we bring some DE's inside on pass rush situations leaves me thinking there is no glaring need here but again, if the right guy is there, take him!

K, P, KR - all three of these are set but I might look to give Lucky some competition.

That leaves a few positions that I feel must be addressed.

CB - We could conceivably roll with the same guys as last year but I am looking for a CB early and I want to cut Carr if at all possible and save some cap money.

SS - I also want to cut Church and save some cash. Wilcox is cheap and can be a back up and contribute on special teams. I am looking for a starting caliber SS in the draft and I would address it within the first 3 rounds. Ramsey, Joseph, Von Bell, and Cash would all be instant starters. Jack and Cravens could be converted to SS and be instant starters as well. Even Killebrew and Simmons could probably displace our current starters. Again, I would find my starting SS this year and there are a lot of options.

DE- another position I am looking to fill and I probably draft 2. You never have enough DE's. I am looking for one early and hoping to add another possibly in the 4th. We could get by with one with Gregory coming back in 4 weeks and having players like Irving and Wilber that can be part of a rotation but I am probably looking for two in the draft.

QB - I am looking to find a developmental QB late. I like Hogan. Smart kid with good leadership skills and has the physical tools as well. Needs development but that is why he is a project. If nothing else he is competition for Moore as no 3 and a practice squad guy if Moore beats him out. I am also looking for a veteran to fill the no 2 role. I would try to trade for one or possibly sign a late cut that is displaced by a draft pick on another team. I would not draft one early this year. I would wait two years to use what is hopefully a late 1st on my QB of the future if we can't find one through FA or through developing a player like Moore or Hogan.

So that is how I see it. 4 positions that need immediate upgrades and others I am looking to add to if the right player is there. While we didn't make huge splashes in Free agency we did fill some needs that should allow us to focus on a few positions that need addressing. The teams goal is to have good options at each position leading into the draft and then upgrade on those with BPA at each pick. They have not accomplished that thanks to losing out on a couple of CB's, DE's, and Weddle but they are in good shape heading into the draft and they should be able to field a competitive team and with the right picks possibly a highly competitive team with the ability to be in it at the end. If they had landed Weddle, Long, and one of the CB's they tried to sign they would be truly going into the draft with no pressing issues and able to go BPA throughout. I have to say their FA strategy was good but missed out on a few of their targets.

Great post. I think the positions we really need high picks are exactly the four you list of RB, QB, SS and CB. But the team is in position that it doesn't have to force any picks. If Myles Jack is the top guy on their board, they can take him and fill those four positions with later picks and the second tier FAs they have kicked the tires on before.

Its similar to RB in last year's draft, I was certain the Cowboys would draft a RB but they stuck to their board because they thought DMC could do the job if needed. (and Dunbar, which they were somewhat right about until he went nuts).

Agree with most of what you say but with 9 picks it wont happen.

I'm not nearly satisfied with DT. I I'd like a 3DT and another 1DT.
Of course I agree with the DE but Crawford is a possibility there
if we can grab a strong active 3DT.
