There really aren't a lot of options and it appears Dallas wants one on the cheap so what about Jarret Stidham since Bill has never kept 4 QBs on the roster and it appears he is the odd guy out. He is in the last year of his rookie deal as a 4th rounder, so the cost is cheap. He has started a few games for the Pats so probably considered a vet. McCarthy is supposed to be a QB guru so maybe he can make the guy something. Probably would cost us only a conditional 6th round pick if he played any. He does have a decent arm and can move well.

He actually hasn't started any games for the Pats. I'm not opposed to kicking the tires if the Pats let him go, but I wouldn't trade anything for him.

What is wrong with Garrett Gilbert?

There isn't anyone out there any better than him.

Good backup quarterbacks are unicorns, and Gilbert is just fine.
I don't know that this guy is any better than Gilbert, but I think we are a long way from being able to say Gilbert is just fine. 1 solid game as a backup out of the 7 years he has been out of college doesn't convince me of much.

Im still not understanding why we did not kick tires on Bortles, but that ship has sailed.

hmm, its like choosing between craap and craap, its just a matter of which craap is less bad and makes me puke less...gilbert played one game in dallas and had a decent half. he was in the league for 7 eyars and never even caught up being a back up and he was out of the league...there is a reason...if I have to choose craap, I rather have one that at least was playing as back up role in the past few years.

regardless, if Dak is lost again for any reason, we are screwed, just like last year and we had Dalton!!!

If any team loses their starting quarterback for several games, they're screwed.

There are about 15-20 legitimate NFL starting quarterbacks on the planet at any given time. The rest are trainwrecks waiting to happen.

I think 1st off in a league that is QB hungry finding a backup is no easy task and all of them have their own warts, people act as if they need a stud at Backup, there are none. I just want a guy who can step in for a game or 2 and at least give us the chance of winning. If you are talking the vast majority of the season then I think every team out there is in trouble if relying on backup.

If Gilbert kept playing over Dalton we make the playoffs last season.
WHHHAAATTT....come on, you are extrapolating one half of decent play to an entire season..... there was a reason Gilbert was out of the league and spent 7 years doing nothing and never staring a game....that's way too wishful thinking

Maybe because he didn’t get many reps as starter on any team he’s been on?

Treating what he did against the Steelers like it’s on par with DeNucci did against the Eagles is equally unconvincing.

If you can’t see the differences between the two there’s a fundamental problem.

Maybe, but that doesn't really change what I said. It still leaves us in the same place about being a long way from being able to say he is fine. Without more evidence we just don't know.

I will say that, while I was generally happy with Gilbert's one start last year, it is worrisome that over 7 years and time with 5-6 teams, however brief that time was in some cases, that he has spent very little time on an active roster, and generally has even struggled to stick with practice squads. Sure teams can make a mistake, but that's 7 years and multiple teams, so it would be hard to argue that he hasn't had plenty of opportunity to show he can be a #2.
