He had practiced the day before he went on IR. It was clear from Garrett's comments that the severity came out of nowhere.

It was a weird sequence.

The announced before he practiced that he had a back issue and that his foot was fine. They even had a quote from him that he would try to push through the pain. Then he practiced once and went on IR.

It seemed that they were not sure what to do with him and his back injury so they decided to have him practice to help make the decision.

I think we really need to sign pettigrew or atleast some other really solid blocking tight end. Difference is that pettigrew is atleast a threat as a receiver.
