Possible strategy in signing Rossum?

I think the staff feels that ST should not be an afterthought like in previous years...thus we draft primarily ST type players including a Buehler who already has paid off big time with all the touchbacks
...letting guys like Crayton, Newman and Austin focus on what they do best should pay off long term...
Joe D knows what he is doing and I think building a group of true specialists on ST will give us an advantage in every game we play in case the offense or the defense is having an off day.
Parcells was right when he said if you win 2 of 3 facets of the the game (offense, defense and ST) you usually win or have a greater chance of winning. I can see that we learned that lesson from last year and are no taking corrective action

Jimmy Johnson said the same thing when he was here there are 3 phases of the game offense, defense and special teams if you win 2 out of the 3 the chances of winning are great. I agree I think special team is a critical aspect of the game it can turn momentum around for a team, it helps to set your offense up with good field position and the opponent poor field position and in many games it can out right win the game in the closing seconds.

And that we actually have a chance to break off a 20 yarder occasionaly now.

Im not even looking for TD's. Just get us better field position once in a blue moon.


Reading the niners boards yesterday they seemed to think he still has good speed so we'll see how he does here.

He has to be an upgrade over Crayton and thats all I care about.

Rossum ranked 7th in punt returns in the league last year. While he did not have a punt return for a TD he did have a 104 yard kickoff return for a TD last season

I have no problem with the move to bring him in. Even if he never scores but occassionally gives us a little better field position it's a win for us.

He had a 74 yard punt return for a TD against the Seahawks called back this year.

A penalty wiped out Allen Rossum's 75-yard punt return against the Seahawks in Week 2.

Rossum's release from the 49ers this week doesn't necessarily mean the Seahawks are finished worrying about him. As Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas notes, Rossum is close to an agreement with the Cowboys, who face Seattle on Nov. 1.

Rossum has had kickoff returns for touchdowns against the Seahawks and Cardinals during his career.

Rossum has been good for a long time when it comes to punt and kickoff returns. He still is as quick as last year. Teams still see him as a ST's threat. We can feel secure with him back there and you put him and Felix out there on kickoffs where do you kick it too?

Of course Felix will not be out there as much an more, and this is another good reason to have Rossum, since Felix is going to play a little banged up now. Rossum is better than Roscoe Parrish on returns, just not as a WR.

Something else to consider,they cut Cletis Gordon(?) to sign Rossum.Who brings more to the table Gordon or Rossum.I think they took the oppurtunity to churn the bottom of the roster,that move looks to be an improvement.You improve the overall talent of the team and in turn get a player that can help in the return game.

Crayton is going nowhere. He is at least a very top notch 3rd WR who can now focus on the slot where he is best anyways. He's starting over Austin because he earned it in camp and had been our most reliable WR thus far until the KC game. I wouldn't even accept a 3rd for Crayton, you're not getting enough value.

Keep Crayton off of punt and KO duties because that's not his bread and butter but know he is willing to do it if the team needs him. Crayton is a team player and would not squawk if he had to play the slot the rest of his career here.

Roy has to be the #1 and is still the most talented WR on the team. We just have to get the ball thrown in his direction. He does deliver when it's in his vicinity. Austin does deserve to start. Rossum is here to have someone focus on punts and KO's at an effective level as it's not Crayton's strength and Felix is sore right now.

So whatever we can do to lesson the wear and tear on him and allow him to get his 10 - 15 touches in the running/passing game the rest of the year is also why Rossum is here.

He's a fearless and savy return man + keeps Austin, Ogletree, Newman and Crayton healthy..gotta like this move atleast initially.

He is better than any of our kick returners (except maybe Felix), I don't see how anyone can be opposed to this. Crayton is and always has been *** at punt returns, and I do NOT want to see Newman back there ever.
